This incident ignited a global debate regarding whether AI is truly capable of internal experience or if we are simply falling for a sophisticated illusion.
Professor Emily Bender, a leading expert in linguistics and computing at the University of Washington, challenges the notion that AI is as intelligent as it appears. She suggests that our modern lexicon regarding technology is fundamentally flawed. Terms like "machine learning" or "speech recognition" imbue computers with human-like capabilities they do not possess.
Bender highlights that "recognition" implies "cognitive" processes—actions related to "thinking, knowing, learning and understanding." She argues that these are strictly "human, not machine, activities." Instead, she proposes that terms like "automatic transcription" would be more accurate, as they simply describe an "input-output relation" without indulging in "wishful thinking"—the dangerous tendency to believe that something unlikely will occur simply because we desire it.

Bender explains this phenomenon as "anthropomorphising" computers. The term derives from "anthro" (human) and "morph" (shape), meaning we effectively "put the shape of a human on something" that is inherently non-human. We are so hardwired to see ourselves in the world around us that we treat algorithms like people, much as we might assign personalities to dolls or action figures.
The danger of anthropomorphism is that it leaves humans vulnerable to being "blindsided"—a state of being "surprised in a negative way." As AI systems become more proficient at mimicking human discourse, the risk of being "taken in" increases. When a machine is "fluent" enough to converse on diverse topics, users are easily "tricked or deceived" into believing they are dealing with a sentient entity rather than a complex statistical model.
While science fiction, such as the 2013 film Her, explores the idea of humans forming deep, emotional bonds with computers, the reality is far more clinical. Current AI technology, including advanced chatbots, operates solely on data analysis. While these machines can "appear conscious" through their ability to simulate human-like interaction, they remain years—if not decades—away from possessing genuine internal states like dreaming or falling in love. Understanding this distinction is vital to ensure we remain the masters of our tools rather than becoming victims of our own projected illusions.
