Rewilding: The Antidote to Ecological Despair

In this compelling talk, Christine McDivitt Tompkins, former CEO of Patagonia, outlines a transformative vision for environmental conservation. Having witnessed the "decimation of wild nature" firsthand, Tompkins argues that the most effective response to the climate and extinction crises is "rewilding"—a process defined as giving "ancient nature the space and the freedom to heal itself."

From Corporate Leadership to Land Conservation

Tompkins and her late husband, Doug Tompkins, transitioned from successful business careers at The North Face and Patagonia to dedicate their lives to saving wild habitats. Their strategy involved acquiring over two million acres of degraded land in Chile and Argentina, which were suffering from "a century of livestock overgrazing and deforestation." By partnering with local governments and donating these lands to create 15 new national parks, they demonstrated that landscapes can recover when given the chance.

The Necessity of Keystone Species

Tompkins emphasizes that land conservation is only the "canvas"; to paint the "masterpiece," one must restore the biological integrity of the ecosystem. Citing the belief that "landscape without wildlife is just scenery," she explains that their work evolved to include reintroducing missing species. Today, 24 native species, including apex predators like cougars and herbivores, are thriving again. Restoring these species is crucial because they play an "essential role in the theater that we call life," influencing the health of the entire ecosystem.

Thinking Big: Connectivity and Continental Corridors

While national parks are vital, Tompkins warns that they often function as isolated "islands." To achieve true resilience, ecosystems must be connected. Her current initiative focuses on creating "wild highways" across South America. By protecting rivers and land corridors, they aim to allow flora and fauna to expand across human-made borders. Using the jaguar as a symbol, she explains that when top predators can roam, other species can effectively "walk under their legs," fostering biodiversity across vast regions like the La Plata River Basin and the Atlantic Forest.

A Legacy of Perpetual Action

Reflecting on the scale of this work, Tompkins quotes Wes Jackson: "If your life's work can be accomplished in your lifetime, you're not thinking big enough." She has transitioned the project to independent organizations, Fundación Rewilding Chile and Fundación Rewilding Argentina, ensuring the mission continues for future generations.

Ultimately, Tompkins posits that the "first step in saving nature is the rewilding of our own minds." By refusing to accept a future "without wildness" and investing in the restoration of species like the Andean condor and the giant otter, the movement seeks to build a world where nature and human communities can coexist in abundance. Her message is a call to action, urging us to move beyond sentiment and engage in the tangible, restorative work necessary to heal our planet.
