Thanks for listening. Hey, Michelle.
I have a question for you today.
Hey, Lindsay. All right.
Let's hear it. So here's the question.
So do you eat most of your meals at the kitchen table or on the couch?
Be honest. I don't think I eat lunch at the kitchen table very often, but breakfast I pretty much eat standing up, hiding from my children at the counter because I just need to eat in peace.
And then, but and dinner it's always kind of a toss up.
You know, sometimes we make it to the table.
Sometimes everybody's just exhausted and we just agreed to eat on the couch.
What about you? Yeah, it's a little bit of both.
I think these days were more on the couch or like kind of on the living room floor watching TV or something.
But I never I never thought of myself as like watching, you know, doing like the TV dinner thing all the time.
But like maybe we're sliding in that direction.
I don't know. Yeah, I know.
Sometimes when I go over to the family's house, if the TV is on all the time, like during a family meal, I get all frustrated, but when it's when it's when it's just my own little family, it's kind of okay.
But we we've been trying to make it more.
Oh, one day I get home. The TV goes off, but it doesn't always.
Yeah, you do your best, right?
We all do. Yeah, the best we can.
That's it. In today's episode, we have a fantastic question, which we are very excited to answer from a listener.
But first, guys, hit that follow button right now so that all business English will drop right into your listening queue.
You don't have to go searching for us or remember to listen.
It can be a part of your daily habit, your weekly habit three times a week.
Okay. That's right. That's right.
All right. So Lindsay, this was such a nice.
Well, the question is great, but also Marlin from Honduras wrote us just this beautiful, beautiful note.
So would you like to read it?
Sure. I would love to. So Marlin says, Highlandsia Michelle, my name is Marlin from Honduras.
I just want you to know that you guys are part are part of my favorite people in this world.
Thanks to you, I fell in love with English.
And my favorite moment of the day is when I listened to all those English podcasts.
You guys have changed my life.
My English has improved a lot.
And you have no idea how much I love your phrase, connection, not perfection.
Oh, Michelle doesn't have just give you material so warm and fun.
Thank you. Yeah. And the truth is, I mean, that's why we do this, right?
This is our vision to help you guys enjoy learning English.
This was the original vision of all our English and to create a world where we're more focused on human connection than our own sort of fear of making mistakes.
Yeah. And it sounds like it's working, Michelle.
Definitely. I love it. So yeah.
Thank you so much for saying that.
So now, um, sure, should I read the question part?
Yeah. Let's see what Marlin's asking us today.
Okay. So Marlin says I was wondering if you can help me with a question.
I was watching my favorite program called Friends.
Hey, my favorite Chateau.
And I heard an interesting phrase.
Rachel told Ross the next expression.
Ross just so you know with us, it's never off the table.
So I wanted to know what the expression, it's never off the table means.
I would love if you can talk about this a little bit in an episode on I want to know if it's pretty common to use this expression nowadays.
Thanks in advance and have a good one.
This is awesome. Thank you, Marlin.
I knew you were going to grab this question, Michelle.
Yeah. I have to steal it.
You're always in friends enthusiasts.
And yes, always on TV. It's fun to watch.
Very accessible for English and culture and things like that.
So really good one. Where are we going to start today to answer the question?
Well, we just also wanted to highlight.
So I snatched this up for business because I really do think that it could be used in a very good business way.
Nice. So I took it for business English for that reason.
But on all years English, we had one of our fun Saturday episodes was, as boy is this a fun episode, insight from Chandler on friends.
So this is not the first time that we've used friends on all our English podcasts or business English podcasts.
So let's go for it. So Lindsay, what does off the table mean?
So off the table means that something is impossible.
It's not an option. It's not a possibility.
There's no chance of something happening.
Right? Yeah. Right, exactly.
So when Rachel says it's never off the table, it means that it's on the table, which means that it is possible.
It's always up for discussion.
There's a chance. So I believe they were talking about something to do with their relationship.
Right. That's my assumption.
Yeah. Yeah. I thought it was going to be out of context because I haven't seen this episode.
It's kind of a romantic phrase.
Right. Right. Because with us, it's always on the table and it kind of gives you shivers like, well, eventually they'll get back to get.
They'll get to get the story of Ross and Rachel.
But I feel like there's a lot of breakups, right?
Maybe or something. Yeah.
And then eventually they got back to you and then they get married and all these things.
Do they get married? No, they don't get married.
But they end up being together for a long time.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't, I won't give it away, but show there's, I mean, it's been such a long, everyone knows.
Yeah. I don't want to add this whole new show.
It's not a new show. Yeah.
What does end up happening?
I mean, we don't have to tell the ending of the series, but like they end up together for a while.
Yeah. The assumption is that they end up together.
The assumption is that they end up together.
Sure. Okay. Love that. Yeah.
I never really followed friends, you know, religiously, but I kind of pop in with the reruns once in a while.
So a little out of context, but it seems kind of romantic.
Like with us, it's always on the table.
I don't know. Right. Or if it's never off the table.
Yeah. Exactly. So, but let's talk more about this on the table off the table.
And why do you think I snatched it up for business?
Oh my gosh. Because something being on the table or off the table can also apply to possibilities in business.
Right. Options, things we could consider, business deals we could do.
Yeah. Very much applies.
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Um, I mean, do you, would you say that this is a part of your vocabulary?
I would say I haven't heard myself use it lately, but sure, I would use it if there were the right context for it.
Right. Yes. It's pretty, it's pretty common.
I mean, I think that it's really good for work.
And, um, yeah. Like you said, to talk about maybe, maybe for negotiations, talking about future options, any kind of decision making.
So, yes. In business, there's just so much push and pull and you have to know what your options are.
So, maybe a company doesn't have the budget for something.
So, it's off the table or maybe they have some extra funds.
So, hiring someone maybe on the table.
It's a possibility. Um, or an offer that's being presented.
So, let's do some more examples and see what's the first one.
All right. So, here's a sample sentence.
Unfortunately, I just heard back from our client and their offer is off the table.
We will have to come up with another plan.
Um, this could also apply in another world of business, which is real estate.
So, my dad just, I think he's just under contract for his house now, just selling his house in Massachusetts.
And, you know, there's always that awkward period where you're taking off.
Everything that we talked to another person.
There's another offer and the previous offers off the table is awkward and little stressful.
Sure. Right. And this is slightly different.
So, again, this is an offer being on the table.
It's still being offered.
Right. Or it's not being offered anymore.
Whereas, if you say with the Ross and Rachel example, it's a possibility.
Is it going to happen? Right.
But when you're specifically talking about an offer being on or off the table.
Is it still available? Yes.
And the important thing with the Ross and Rachel thing is she said, Ross, with us, it's always on the table.
Or it's never off the table, right?
So, with us, the us is the key piece you need for context there.
Exactly. Yes. Yes. Here's another example.
I spoke with Jean this morning and he said, all options are on the table.
So, let's go to work. Let's get to work.
So, this is saying all options are possible, right?
We're still considering all of them.
Maybe you're putting together some kind of a proposal.
Yeah. We're a company and there are many different things you could add to the proposal because all the options are open.
Good. Okay. Then we could say, I'm sorry, but an open concept office just isn't on the table right now.
Yeah. It's not, yeah. That's interesting.
It's not being considered.
Yeah. Open concept, I feel like kind of had its day and then the pandemic hit.
And no one's even going to the office right.
But I'm not sure if people really lie.
Maybe that could be our key or just our poll for today, Michelle, could be, you know, how do you feel about an open concept office?
Do you think that would work for you or did it work?
Did you ever have an open concept office?
I liked it. It's just the only thing is sometimes if you need to take a phone call or something like that.
You know, there's no real privacy, but overall, it's also going to get loud.
But overall, I liked it because I liked to the people I worked with.
I found an entertaining and we kind of had fun.
So, okay. Yeah. You've mentioned that a few times.
How does it work when you're on a call, though, even a professional call?
And there's so much background noise behind you.
Yeah. You know, we, a lot of times we were on a conference call so we might have all been on the call.
But if I were to have made, if I were to have had to make a phone call by myself, if I needed to make a personal call, you know, I might just leave, walk out for a little bit.
If I really didn't want anybody to hear me or if it was a professional thing, then wouldn't worry about it.
You know, just everybody's, everybody's making their calls and we just have to do it.
Okay. Interesting. Yeah, but you know, trends in office space, definitely interesting, because there's a lot about the time.
What's the next phrase, Michelle?
Okay. Then the next example is, wow, I can't believe they called so quickly an offer is on the table.
So sometimes maybe if somebody gets a job offer, oh, they put an offer is on the table, now we just need to negotiate, right?
Yeah. Or this would really fit with the real estate context, selling a home.
Right. Right. Oh, we just went on, we just went on the market and wow, I just got a call.
I can't believe they made an offer an offer is on the table.
Yeah. Yes. What makes you truly fluent in English?
Understanding the crosstalk when native speakers cut each other off or false starts, we capture all of these in our human created transcripts, which you can view in real time as you listen on the Aller's English app.
You can even try different listening speeds now, like 1.4x or 0.9x, check it out at allersenglish.com slash APP.
All right. Let's get into some options here for listeners.
What are they, Michelle?
Okay. So one, if something is on the table, another thing you could say is it's under discussion, like it's still being discussed.
It's still on the table.
So I don't know if it will come through, but it's under discussion.
So it's then the key piece is it's being discussed.
Yeah. I like that. Right.
And then off. Right. So something is not an option.
For example. Mm-hmm. That plan is not an option anymore.
Yes. It's nice. And then it makes me think of the expression not up for discussion, but that's more.
Oh, not up. But that's more kind of in the personal life context, like with your kids.
Don't you think? Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Do you hear under discussion?
Now I'm wondering if I made that.
Maybe I meant maybe I meant up for discussion.
Yeah. I think there's a differ.
I think you could say under discussion.
It's being discussed. Yeah.
Totally. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's true.
It's true. We need a lot of dietary options.
People have restrictions, gluten free, all these different things.
Michelle, what is our takeaway for today?
We love the question. We love our listener.
Yeah. Where we go to finish up.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, this is great.
I especially always, I always love getting something from friends and then planning an episode about it.
