📋 Summary

The Core Question: Is Marriage Becoming Outdated?

The discourse surrounding the relevance of marriage in contemporary society is a frequent topic of debate among young adults. Umi, a contributor from Malaysia, addresses this head-on, noting that while many of her peers are actively participating in the institution of marriage, the fundamental perception of what marriage entails is undergoing a significant transformation. Far from becoming "outdated," marriage remains a vital social framework; however, the rigid expectations surrounding its execution are being challenged.

Challenging Societal Expectations

A primary point of contention identified by Umi is the disconnect between the essence of marriage and the "cultures and traditions" that have historically burdened it. She argues that the institution itself is not the problem, but rather the performative nature of weddings that society has come to expect. Many individuals fall into the trap of imagining that a wedding "has to be something big or something expensive." This societal pressure creates a barrier to entry that is not inherent to the commitment of marriage itself but is instead a byproduct of external performance.

The Autonomy of Choice

Umi emphasizes that the modern couple possesses the agency to redefine their union. She asserts that a wedding "doesn't have to follow certain guidelines or certain societal expectations." By stripping away the pressure to conform to traditional extravagances, couples can reclaim the marriage process. The central argument is that the choice lies entirely "up to the individual itself." When couples decouple the act of marriage from the heavy weight of societal expectations, the institution becomes more accessible and authentic.

Rationalizing Tradition

The concluding insight of the discussion centers on the distinction between the institution of marriage and the cultural baggage attached to it. Umi posits that the only elements becoming truly outdated are those "cultures and tradition[s] that's not rationally... set up by the society." By identifying these irrational expectations as the true source of obsolescence, Umi provides a path forward: a rational, individual-centric approach to marriage. Rather than abandoning the institution, the focus should shift toward filtering out the outdated rituals that no longer serve a logical or personal purpose in the lives of modern partners.

📖 Transcript

Hi everyone, my name is Umi and I'm from Malaysia.
So my question is, is marriage becoming outdated?
This is a really big question because a lot of people, a lot of my friends in my age, around my age, they are getting married a lot, and I don't think it's something that's becoming outdated.
I think the only thing that's probably part of marriage process itself, like cultures and traditions, they are becoming a bit outdated itself because a lot of cultures in a lot of cultures marriage is something big and people just tend to imagine that it's some it has to be something big or something expensive which is not true it's up to in the individual itself they have the choice on how they want their wedding to be so it doesn't have to follow certain you know guidelines or certain societal expectations with it to that so yeah it's marriage is not becoming outdated the only thing that's becoming outdated in marriage itself is just a culture and tradition that's not rationally you know set up by the society
