📋 Summary

The Tale of Ashes for Sale: A Lesson in Greed and Generosity

The Strained Friendship

The folktale Ashes for Sale introduces two long-time companions, Antonio and Jose, whose relationship has deteriorated due to their diverging fortunes. Antonio, wealthy and possessing "a big house with an even bigger yard," has become "a greedy, stingy man." In contrast, Jose struggles to make ends meet by selling cheese from his single cow. Rather than offering support, Antonio takes pleasure in belittling Jose, frequently mocking his lack of success at the market.

The Cruel Trick

Driven by a desire to continue his "fun" at the expense of his friend, Antonio plays a deceptive trick on Jose. He presents a sack of fireplace ashes, claiming that the people in town are "desperate for extra ashes" and are "willing to pay great money" for them. Trusting his old friend, a hopeful Jose rushes home to tell his wife, Sylvia, that their financial worries are over. Despite Sylvia's skepticism regarding Antonio’s sudden generosity, Jose remains convinced that the plan is "foolproof."

A Stroke of Serendipity

Jose’s attempt to sell the ashes at the market ends in humiliation, as he is met with laughter rather than customers. A kind mask-maker, noting his misfortune, gifts him a fierce "crocodile mask." Later, while lost in a cave, Jose uses this mask to protect his eyes from dripping water. When a group of bandits enters the cave, the sight of the mask in the torchlight causes them to flee in terror, convinced an "angry crocodile" is hunting them. They abandon their bags of money, leaving Jose with a fortune. Ultimately, Jose chooses to use this wealth to "assist those in need," supporting schools, libraries, and struggling merchants.

The Taste of His Own Medicine

When Antonio discovers Jose’s newfound wealth, his jealousy consumes him. He approaches Jose, seeking the secret to his success. Seizing the opportunity to teach a moral lesson, Jose tells Antonio that he owes his riches to the "good advice" of selling ashes. Antonio, blinded by greed, attempts to replicate the business, only to be mocked by the townspeople.

Reconciliation and True Friendship

Defeated, Antonio returns to apologize, admitting he let his "greed get the better of me." Jose, having reached a place of maturity and forgiveness, reveals that the experience allowed him to find the happiness that comes from helping others. Witnessing this, Antonio asks to learn how to practice such kindness. The story concludes with the two men rekindling their friendship, replacing their former rivalry with shared meals and acts of generosity, proving that true wealth is found in connection rather than material gain.
