📋 Summary

The Accidental Stowaway: Passepartout’s Solo Journey

In this chapter of Around the World in Eighty Days, the narrative shifts to focus on the misadventures of Phileas Fogg’s loyal valet, Passepartout. Following a violent incident in an "awful restaurant" where he was left behind, Passepartout finds himself aboard the Carnatic without his master, Phileas Fogg, or the lady Aouda. Awakening from a dazed state, he experiences a moment of realization that hits him "as if struck by lightning": he is on his way to Yokohama, Japan, completely alone and "without a penny in his pocket."

Survival in Yokohama

Upon arriving in Yokohama, Passepartout faces the harsh reality of being stranded in a foreign land. Driven by hunger and desperation, he traverses the city, exploring European merchants and consulates in a futile attempt to locate Fogg. As the hours turn into days, his situation becomes dire. Faced with the prospect of starvation, he makes a difficult decision to part with his belongings. He trades his clothes for a "brand new Japanese costume," consisting of a long coat and a "one-sided turban," hoping to blend in while he searches for a way to survive and eventually reach America.

The Path to the Acrobat Troupe

Desperate for food and passage to America, Passepartout happens upon a billboard for the "Acrobatic Troop, presented by the Honorable William Battlecart." The promise of a troupe "heading to America" provides him with a glimmer of hope. He approaches Mr. Battlecart, presenting himself as a "gymnast, a singer, and a performer." Relying on his nimble youth, he convinces the troupe leader to hire him, despite his silly attire. Battlecart notes that Passepartout must adapt, telling him, "You're hired... But you'll have to find something... half decent to wear." Consequently, Passepartout is drafted into the troupe’s most unique act: the "long noses."

The Human Pyramid and the Reunion

As the troupe performs, the spectacle is grand, featuring gongs, flutes, and daredevil feats. The "long noses" act, inspired by the god Tingu, involves performers wearing bamboo noses ranging from five to ten feet in length. During the final act—a "human pyramid" where performers balance atop these elongated appendages—Passepartout struggles to maintain his position.

In a stroke of incredible fortune, Phileas Fogg and Aouda, who were "exploring the city," decide to attend the show. Amidst the chaos of the collapsing pyramid, Passepartout spots his master. The reunion is swift; Fogg, displaying his characteristic calm, pays Mr. Battlecart for the damages caused to the "ruined" noses. The trio successfully departs for the steamer General Grant. The chapter concludes with a humorous image: a relieved Passepartout, in his haste to leave, forgets to remove his absurd six-foot-long bamboo nose and wings, carrying the remnants of his acrobatic life aboard the ship as they continue their journey.

It was Passapartout.
Three hours after Fix had left him in that awful restaurant, he had woken up still dizzy from the knock to his head.
He called out, the Carnatic, the Carnatic, as if he knew where he had to be.
Barely able to stand, he pulled himself up and stumbled along to the ship.
