For generations, the choices surrounding end-of-life arrangements have been limited to a binary option: traditional burial or cremation. However, as societal values shift toward environmental sustainability and personal comfort, a third option is gaining traction: aquamation, technically referred to as alkaline hydrolysis.
Aquamation is a sophisticated, science-based process that offers a distinct departure from the combustion-based methods of traditional cremation. The body of the deceased is placed within a pressurized stainless steel vessel. It is then submerged in a mixture of water and alkali, heated to approximately 150 degrees centigrade for a period of three to four hours.
During this immersion, the organic materials are broken down, leaving behind only the inorganic bone minerals. These remains are then processed into a powder, which is returned to the family in an urn—a final step that mirrors the familiar ritual of traditional cremation. The remaining liquid byproduct is a completely sterile solution composed of amino acids, sugars, nutrients, salts, and soap, which is safely returned through standard wastewater treatment systems.
