📋 Summary

The Impossible Deadline

The story follows Cantuña, a renowned architect in Quito, Ecuador, who is commissioned by friars to build the atrium of the city's very first church. The project is described as "dramatic, majestic, and larger than life." However, the friars impose a seemingly impossible condition: the entire construction must be completed within six months, or Cantuña will face a life sentence in jail. Despite the daunting nature of the task, Cantuña accepts, asserting that "my word is my bond."

The Struggle and the Despair

Cantuña dedicates himself entirely to the project, spending five months on blueprints alone. This leaves him with only one month to gather materials and oversee the labor. Despite his efforts to mobilize hundreds of workers to chip away at volcanic rock "from dawn until dusk," the project falls behind. With only one day left, the atrium is only "halfway done." Facing the reality of his failure, Cantuña sends his workers home and sits in the dark, despairing over his impending fate.

A Dark Bargain

In his moment of deepest distress, a mysterious man appears—the devil himself. The devil offers to finish the atrium before the "first rooster crows" in exchange for Cantuña's soul for "all of eternity." Cantuña initially refuses, but as he stares into the devil's eyes, he formulates a plan. He agrees to the deal on one condition: if the atrium is not "100% complete"—with not a single stone missing—when the rooster crows, the devil forfeits his claim to Cantuña's soul.

The Architect's Clever Outwitting

The devil summons "invisible spirits" or "little helpers" who work with supernatural speed to complete the structure. As the deadline approaches, Cantuña notices the work is nearing completion. In a final act of calculated defiance, he removes a single stone from one of the walls just before the rooster crows. When the devil presents the finished atrium, Cantuña points out the missing stone, arguing that because the structure is not "100% complete," the devil has failed to fulfill his end of the bargain.

Conclusion and Legacy

Bested by a "mere mortal," the furious devil vanishes in a "dark puff of smoke." Cantuña retains his soul and earns great acclaim for his masterpiece. The story concludes with the legend that the missing stone has never been found, and visitors to the San Francisco Church in Quito are still encouraged to look for the gap in the masonry—a testament to the architect who used his wits to outsmart the devil himself.
