Embracing the Marathon Spirit: A Conversation with Claire Holt

In this special live episode of The Allie on the Run Show, recorded at WBUR City Space during the excitement of Boston Marathon weekend, host Allie Feller sits down with actress and avid runner Claire Holt. The conversation captures the unique energy of marathon weekend, blending humor, personal vulnerability, and the shared passion that defines the running community.

The "Send It" Mentality and Running Community

Claire Holt, known for her roles in The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars, reveals that running has become a central part of her life. She shares her experience joining a run club in Miami, where she found a sense of belonging among "like-minded people." For Claire, the intimidation of showing up to a run club for the first time was quickly replaced by the addictive nature of group training. She humorously notes that her motivation often involves "60 shirtless men" at the track and motivational playlists featuring men yelling at her to keep going—a strategy she jokingly refers to as having "daddy issues" but finds undeniably effective for performance.

Vulnerability and the "Imposter Syndrome"

Despite her success, Claire is refreshingly honest about the struggles every runner faces. She discusses the "imposter syndrome" that often surfaces in the age of social media, where it is easy to feel slow compared to the polished highlights of others. She emphasizes that running a marathon is inherently difficult, regardless of one's pace. Her relationship with racing is complex; she admits to being "obsessed" with the sport while simultaneously joking about how much she complains during training. She highlights the mental highs and lows of the process, from the early morning "swear words" at 3:30 a.m. to the sense of triumph after a successful workout.

The Joy of Non-Time-Goal Racing

One of the most poignant themes of the discussion is the pressure of time goals. Claire reflects on her first marathon in New York, noting that if she had hit her initial time goal, she might have been a "one and done" runner. Instead, failing to reach that specific number allowed her to fall in love with the experience of racing. She advocates for soaking in the atmosphere, high-fiving spectators, and noticing the "beautiful parts of humanity"—like the runners with prosthetic legs and the guides for blind athletes—rather than staring at a watch every five seconds. She concludes that "positive splits for positive people" is a mantra that brings more joy than rigid performance metrics.

Connecting Through Shared Passion

Throughout the live show, the audience is treated to "Clarigories," a high-energy game that reveals Claire’s competitive nature and quick wit. Beyond the laughs, the episode underscores why runners are such a tight-knit community. Allie and Claire agree that the sport fosters a unique environment where strangers support strangers, creating a rare space where "everyone’s on the same team for one day."

Conclusion: You’ve Got This

As the weekend approaches, Claire offers a final, unfiltered pep talk to the runners in the audience. Her message is one of encouragement: look at how far you have come and remember the hard work you have put into your training. Whether you are running the 5K or the full marathon, the spirit of the weekend is about community, resilience, and finding power in the pain. This episode serves as a reminder that behind every runner—whether an actress or a local enthusiast—is a human being driven by the simple, beautiful desire to challenge themselves and connect with others.
