Love on the Run: Navigating Life, Athletics, and Partnership

In a special Valentine’s week episode of the Allie on the Run show, host Allie Feller sits down with professional runners and content creators Mika Rivera and Adam Wood. The couple, who are high school sweethearts and rising stars in the marathon world, share their journey of growing together through the challenges of collegiate athletics, long-distance relationships, and their transition into the professional running scene.

The High School Roots and Early Connection

Mika and Adam’s story began on their high school cross-country team. Adam, focused entirely on his running goals, initially overlooked Mika until she began to shine on the state championship podium. "I was pretty locked in in high school... all I could think about was running," Adam recalls. Their relationship blossomed through shared training and tentative steps, eventually leading to their first date at a mini-golf course. Despite the pressures of teenage life and the eventual separation when Adam left for Brigham Young University (BYU), the two maintained a strong connection, grounded in mutual respect for each other’s individual aspirations.

Growing Together Through Distance

When Adam transitioned to college, he initially feared the challenges of a long-distance relationship. However, he credits their success to the fact that Mika was an "independent queen" with her own goals. During their college years—Adam at BYU and Mika at Utah State—they navigated a "medium distance" relationship, often meeting on weekends and at cross-country meets. They emphasize that this period was crucial for their personal development, as they learned to support each other’s ambitions without sacrificing their own identities.

The Professional Marathon Evolution

Post-college, the couple’s focus shifted toward the marathon. Adam, having finished his collegiate career, turned to the roads, eventually running a personal best of 2:16:58 at CIM. Mika, who initially balanced a career as a social media manager for a pediatric dental office with her training, eventually joined Ed Eyestone’s elite training group in Utah. This move, she notes, provided the structure and camaraderie she needed to take her running to the next level. Her marathon debut at the Marathon Project was a transformative experience, where she ran an impressive 2:31:35. Adam, who paced her through the first 21 miles, describes the experience as "so painful" but incredibly rewarding, highlighting their deep emotional investment in one another’s performances.

Building a Brand and a Life

Beyond their athletic achievements, Mika and Adam have built a significant community through their content creation on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. What began as a way to make running feel "not as serious and stressful" has evolved into a sustainable professional path. They share their training, workouts, and the realities of being a couple who are both marathon athletes. Their transparency has resonated with fans, creating a space where they can be vulnerable about their struggles and celebrate their breakthroughs.

A Partnership of Mutual Support

Mika and Adam define their relationship through shared values and constant encouragement. When asked about their favorite memories, they look past the accolades to moments of growth—such as Mika’s breakthrough race at regionals, where she proved her potential to herself. Their daily routine, filled with early runs, shared podcasts, and honest communication, underscores a partnership built on genuine friendship. As they look toward the future—with Mika aiming to represent Peru in the 2028 Olympic marathon—they remain committed to being each other’s "hype person."

In reflecting on their bond, Adam notes, "She’s the best in getting me up on my feet," while Mika adds that she feels most loved when Adam supports her through her lowest moments. Their story is a testament to the power of love in the world of high-performance athletics, proving that the most successful journeys are those shared with a partner who believes in your potential as much as you do.

This is my favorite holiday and I know people will say it's a Hallmark holiday blah blah blah we should tell people we love them every day.
Yeah, I agree, we totally should do that.
But a day that's all about celebrating love, i say, why the heck not?
