📋 Summary

The Mission to Save Mr. Ratburn

The Unexpected News

The story begins with a typical school day interrupted by a phone call. Arthur, Buster, and Francine overhear their teacher, Mr. Ratburn, discussing wedding arrangements with a woman named Patty. The students are shocked, as they previously assumed teachers only went home to "sharpen pencils, eat kale, and dream up homework assignments." Their initial impression of Patty is negative; they perceive her as demanding and "trouble from the beginning," especially after observing her criticizing Mr. Ratburn’s choices at a restaurant and pressuring him to be less "easygoing."

The Fear of Academic Doom

The students become convinced that if Mr. Ratburn marries Patty, their lives will be "toast"—specifically, "unbuttered toast." They fear that Patty’s influence will lead to "more homework, more red pen, more tests and quizzes," and a significant reduction in fun activities like "class parties and field trips." Fearing for their academic freedom, Arthur, Buster, and Francine unite like "superheroes against the forces of evil" to prevent the union.

Failed Attempts at Sabotage

Their first strategy involves jealousy. Buster and Arthur visit "Patrick’s Chocolate," a shop run by a "chocolate-making genius," to buy fancy chocolates. They intend to frame them as coming from a "secret admirer" to make Mr. Ratburn realize there is someone else out there for him. However, the plan fails when Mr. Ratburn politely shares the chocolates with them, remaining oblivious to their ulterior motives.

Their second attempt involves setting Mr. Ratburn up with the school librarian, Miss Turner. They attempt to facilitate this by forging a love note inside a book of poetry. This plan also backfires, as Miss Turner easily identifies that the note is not from Mr. Ratburn, noting his error in spelling "library" and his lack of poetic prowess.

The Wedding Revelation

As the day of the wedding arrives, the students prepare to "object" during the ceremony, a dramatic move inspired by television tropes. However, their perspective shifts entirely when they arrive. They discover that Patty is not the bride, but rather Mr. Ratburn’s sister, who describes him as her "baby brother." The mystery is finally solved when the groom walks down the aisle with his true partner: Patrick, the chocolate-maker from the store they visited earlier.

A Sweet Conclusion

The realization that Mr. Ratburn is marrying a "chocolate-making genius" turns the students' anxiety into relief and joy. They conclude that if Patrick can create a delicious wedding cake, he will surely "sweeten Mr. Ratburn up." The mission to stop the wedding is abandoned in favor of celebration, as the students happily hit the dance floor, content that their teacher has found a partner who is "nice, kind, and fun."
