10 Hard-Won Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Starting a company is often glorified by media and society, but the reality is far more grueling. Drawing from the experiences of industry titans like Jensen Huang of Nvidia and personal reflections on building a business, here are 10 essential lessons for those embarking on the entrepreneurial path.

1. Acknowledge the "Insanely Hard" Reality

Jensen Huang famously noted that if he had known the "pain and suffering" and the level of vulnerability involved, he might never have started Nvidia. Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart; over 90% of startups fail. You must be genuinely "in love with the problem" and driven by a deep sense of mission rather than societal expectations, or you will likely burn out.

2. Embrace the "Side Hustle" Approach

There is a persistent myth that you must "full send" it—quitting your job and living in poverty—to succeed. Instead, consider the "side hustle" model. By maintaining a full-time job while dedicating consistent hours to your venture, you maintain optionality and reduce personal risk until you see real traction and data that justify a full-time commitment.

3. Prioritize Helping Others Over Yourself

Early career success is often driven by a desire to "pad my own resume" to prove one's worth. However, true, large-scale success comes from shifting focus toward others. By obsessively focusing on solving specific problems for your customers—helping them lose weight, achieve goals, or overcome obstacles—you create inherent value that results in organic growth and long-term success.

4. Transition from "I" to "We"

While working alone is effective for individual tasks, scaling a business requires a team. The shift from an "I mindset" to a "we mindset" is a challenging transition, but it is essential for building a company of impact. Leadership involves the joy of investing in your team and helping them develop in their own right.

5. Trust the Compound Effect

Success is rarely overnight; it follows the "10,000 hours" rule. Many early efforts feel like they are failing because they are on a small scale relative to expectations. You must be willing to do the "boring work" and trust the process, as real value takes years, if not decades, to compound.

6. Entrepreneurship as a Test of Pain Tolerance

At its core, starting a business is a "game of survival." It is a test of your grit, persistence, and resilience. If you can withstand the constant rejection and "footfalls," you demonstrate that you deserve the success that follows.

7. Never Give Up on Yourself

Reflecting on conversations with dozens of successful founders, a consistent pattern emerged: they simply "never, ever, ever gave up." When the stress feels overwhelming, maintaining the perspective that you will eventually make it is crucial. Trust your values and your hard work.

8. Treat Business Like a Professional Sport

Just as elite athletes like Michael Jordan or Serena Williams utilize coaches and trainers, entrepreneurs must treat their minds as their most important asset. Seeing a therapist is not a sign of weakness; it is a strategic tool to "cleanse and relax" the mind, allowing you to make better decisions for your business.

9. Build a Support System

Business is existential and can be incredibly lonely. When you reach a point where money is no longer the primary concern, you realize that success without connection is a "miserable outcome." Cultivating deep friendships and a support system is the best "medicine" to keep you sane throughout the journey.

10. Enjoy the Journey

We often fall into the trap of thinking, "if I just achieve this one accolade, then I'll be happy." In reality, achieving goals often leaves one feeling empty if the journey itself wasn't savored. Embrace the ups, the downs, the stress, and the laughter. If you stay the course, you will be successful—ensure you are happy along the way.
