Kid News Daily: A Comprehensive Overview

The Holiday Debate: Columbus Day vs. Indigenous Peoples Day

As of October 14, 2024, the United States remains divided on the significance of the second Monday in October. Traditionally celebrated as "Columbus Day" to honor the Italian explorer who reached the Americas in 1492, the holiday has faced increasing scrutiny. Historians have uncovered "disturbing details" regarding the treatment of the original inhabitants of the land, leading to a national movement to shift the focus toward Native Americans, or "Indigenous people." The Pew Research Center notes that this has become the "most inconsistently named, most inconsistently observed national holiday" in the country, with 11 states and D.C. opting for the change, while 16 states maintain the original title.

Advancements in Space Exploration

Space news is dominated by two significant events. First, NASA is launching an unmanned spacecraft on a five-year mission to explore "Europa," one of Jupiter's 95 moons. The mission aims to investigate whether an 80-mile deep ocean, hidden beneath a "thick layer of ice," possesses the potential to support life. Simultaneously, SpaceX achieved a major milestone in rocket engineering. The company successfully launched and retrieved a "super heavy rocket" booster, which performed a controlled descent back to the launch pad, where it was caught by massive mechanical arms dubbed "Mechazilla." Elon Musk praised the feat as "science fiction, without the fiction part," emphasizing the necessity of reusable rockets for future missions to the Moon and Mars.

Sports and Recovery Efforts

In the world of professional baseball, the 2024 season has narrowed down to four teams competing for a World Series spot: the New York Yankees, Cleveland Guardians, New York Mets, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Meanwhile, Florida continues the slow process of recovery following the devastation caused by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. While cleanup has commenced, approximately one million residents remain without power, and fuel shortages persist in the Tampa-St. Pete area. President Biden has issued an emergency declaration to provide financial aid, noting that over 250,000 Floridians have already registered for assistance.

Cultural Highlights and Heartwarming Heroics

In California, the 52nd annual Half Moon Bay weigh-off celebrates "gargantuan gourds" capable of gaining 60 to 70 pounds in a single day. Last year’s champion, Travis Ginger, returns to defend his record of a 2,749-pound pumpkin.

On a more personal note, a remarkable story of animal loyalty emerged from Washington State. A 13-year-old rescue dog named Geeta saved her 84-year-old owner, Keith Johnson, after he suffered a broken hip and remained on the ground for six hours. Geeta successfully led a deputy to her owner’s location, a feat the sheriff’s office credited with "saving Keith's life." This story highlights the "loyalty and heroism" of pets, serving as a poignant reminder of the bond between humans and their furry companions.

Good morning, and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Tori. Today is Monday, October 14, 2024.
Depending on where you live, it could be Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day.
And that's where we begin, with the debate on what to call this particular holiday.
For nearly 100 years, the second Monday in October was named for Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who sailed from Europe to the Americas in 1492.
But when historians dug up disturbing details about how he and other colonizers treated those who were here first, a push began to strip his name from the holiday and give the honor to Native Americans, also known as Indigenous people.
