📋 Summary

The Shift from Self-Taught Foundations to Formal Instruction

For a long time, my approach to musical mastery was defined by independent exploration. I have been "trying to teach myself" the guitar, relying heavily on a combination of "videos online" and various "books that I found in a charity shop." This autodidactic phase allowed me to grasp the basics, but I eventually hit a plateau. I reached a "point now where I think I would probably learn more by having a teacher," signaling a necessary transition from isolated practice to structured, expert-led education.

The Experience of a Group Learning Environment

My decision to enroll in a course led me to my "first ever guitar lesson" this morning. Unlike the solitary experience of watching tutorials, this was a "group lesson." This environment proved to be socially enriching, as I "met lots of new people." The demographic was quite diverse; it was a "mixed age group." While I noted with a hint of self-awareness that "I have a feeling that I was probably the oldest one there," the communal aspect of learning alongside others added a layer of engagement that online videos simply cannot replicate.

Mastering the Fundamentals: The Path Forward

The technical content of the initial session was concise yet foundational. During the lesson, "we were shown three different chords." These three chords serve as the building blocks for the curriculum ahead. The instructor emphasized the importance of consistency, and I am now tasked with the responsibility to "make sure that I practice them ready for our next lesson." The objective is clear: we are preparing to "try and learn a song using those three chords." This practical application—moving from isolated chord shapes to a cohesive musical piece—is exactly the kind of structured progression I was seeking when I decided to abandon my solitary study methods in favor of professional guidance.
