Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.

Come on, let's master English!
Hello everybody. Welcome back to Daily EZ English Expression.
It is for most of you December 31, 2014.
Happy New Year's Eve.
Boy, oh boy, I hope that 2014 has been a good year for you.
and I hope that 2015 is even better.
Or if 2014 was bad, I hope 2015 is great.
Yeah. How was 2014 for me?
Yeah, it's pretty good.
Actually, I must be honest. 2014 was...
I had several very bad years.
In a row. So, I mean like five or six years that were terrible, seriously bad.
And 2014 was good. 2014 finally my bad luck started to turn around so I'm hoping to continue my happiness.
Yeah, I'm getting old so I would like to die a happy man.
I don't know, midlife crisis, I don't know what it was.
But anyway, 2014 was good and I plan to make 2015 extra special.
And I hope you do too.
Now, in America and maybe right now in your country, people are preparing to celebrate the end of 2014 and to welcome 2015.
I know in several countries around the world, people do this by eating a grape!
as the clock strikes midnight.
I know you do that in Thailand.
I know you do that in Spain, very interesting.
What other kinds of interesting traditions do you have in your country, in America basically, people count down 10, nine, eight, seven, the last 10 seconds of 2014 and then they all scream and cheer and they they kiss the person next to them and I think that's pretty much it.
People tend to drink a little bit too much. For me.
What will I do on New Year's Eve?
I'll probably go to sleep early.
I'm not much of a party guy but believe me my my thoughts are the same as most people.
I'm excited about the new year I do want to make it special.
Now one thing that's very common in America on New Year's Eve is the song Old Lang Syne and the song sounds something like this.
Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind should old acquaintance be forgot and old lang sign dot -dot you know the music yeah it's a very famous song at least in America and the UK that's for sure it's a scots poem it's actually a poem it's called Old Langue Sign.
It was written in 1788.
Yeah, a long time ago.
And the name, again, Old Langue Sign, let me spell it.
This is Scottish English, A -U -L -D, Old Lang, L -A -N -G, sign S -Y -N -E.
Now, the simple most common translation of the title is for the old times for the sake of old times in memory of the old times.
That's the idea and this song is very common once again in America on New Year's Eve but it's also very common at funerals and some places they use it as graduation music.
it's actually a very pretty song and if we think about it for old times sake for the sake of old times for the good old memories of the past year yeah it's basically saying thank you to the past and goodbye and of course we have to think about the future so on New Year's Eve everybody's Everybody's cheering and everybody's very happy.
But at the funerals and graduations, it's actually kind of a sad song.
Because lots of people have great memories of school, have great memories of the person that they will never have again, at least in the flesh.
Old Lang Syne. It's a great song.
And if you go to the UK, if you go to America in English speaking country, you're gonna hear it, especially on New Year's Eve.
And once again, for most of you, it is New Year's Eve.
And I want to say thank you.
Thank you so much for listening to my podcast, for allowing me to be your English coach in 2014.
I promise to do so much more to do a better job in 2015 and Thank you.
Happy new year to you.
Let's check out a dialogue Here what's this?
The words told length sign.
We'll be singing it at midnight.
Oh, thank you Yeah, I'll be honest this song gets sung a lot but nobody remembers the lyrics people only remember the old laying sign the old laying sign.
That's all that people remember especially if they've been drinking.
So if you go to a new year's party a New Year's Eve party they will probably give you the lyrics.
Oh also I I should say, Christmas in America is family time but New Year's Eve is party time, meeting your friends, going out, having a good time.
And I know in many countries, actually, New Year's is family time.
You have a different, maybe the situation is backwards in your country.
Regardless of your tradition, I hope that you have a fantastic evening.
Either with your friends or with your family.
and once again I hope that 2014 was a good year for you.
Think back on it find the good memories, find the good things, find the lessons from 2014 and make 2015 even better.
Okay? I promise to help you with your English but the rest of your life is up to you.
