The narrative opens with the Jade Emperor in a state of profound agitation, lamenting, "I sent our entire army and they couldn't arrest him." Having suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Sun Wukong, the celestial leadership is forced to reconsider their strategy. Seeking a more formidable opponent, Guan Yin suggests, "Perhaps we can ask the sage Erlang to capture him." Recognizing that "Erlang is very powerful," the Jade Emperor dispatches a messenger to Plum Mountain, hoping to neutralize the threat posed by the rebellious Monkey King.
Back at the waterfall, Wukong revels in his triumph, boasting to his subjects that the Jade Emperor and his forces are "no match for Sun Wukong." His confidence is met with the arrival of Erlang, who declares, "The Jade Emperor sent me to arrest you."
The ensuing combat is a display of raw power. As Wukong leaps at Erlang with his "iron bar," the sage blocks the strike with his sword. The battle escalates when Erlang shakes his body to grow into a giant, prompting Wukong to respond in kind. The text describes a chaotic scene where "clouds swirled and wind blew as the two giants fought in the sky," their weapons clashing incessantly through the night, creating a stalemate that forces Wukong to seek a "different plan."
Recognizing the futility of a direct physical confrontation, Wukong turns to his supernatural ability to transform. He attempts to outmaneuver Erlang through a series of tactical disguises:
Erlang, displaying keen intuition, notices the abnormality of the structure, remarking, "I never saw a temple with a flagpole before." He deduces, "This must be Wukong," and prepares to "kick in that door," forcing Wukong to abandon his disguise and flee once more.
While the chase unfolds on Earth, the celestial observers—the Jade Emperor, the Queen, and Guan Yin—watch the spectacle from above. The sage Laozi intervenes, citing Wukong's previous transgressions, noting that "that monkey, Sun Wukong, ate all the peaches from the garden."
Laozi takes decisive action by hurling a "metal ring" from his arm down toward the Earth. The precision of the strike is absolute: "The ring hit Wukong on the head." Left "dizzy" and incapacitated, the once-unconquerable Monkey King falls to the ground, marking the end of his defiance and the success of the celestial forces in neutralizing the "Powerful Sage."
