As the years go by, we're getting less and less sleep.
A survey by Chemist4U in 2022 found that Brits get just 6 hours and 10 minutes of sleep per night on average.
Economic stress and the overwhelming demands of modern life have been blamed for this, but there's no real evidence to back that up.
Still, the fact remains that not getting enough sleep can significantly impact our daily lives, so it's a source of real frustration.
Now some people might actually find that 6 hours and 10 minutes is plenty of sleep.
Prominent figures like Margaret Thatcher, Tom Ford, Elon Musk and Donald Trump have all famously managed to thrive despite claiming to get only three or four hours of sleep per night.
But most of us need much more shut-eye than that to feel refreshed.
Actually no, there are a number of factors at play.
The general recommendation for healthy adults is indeed between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night, which is already a fairly wide range.
That just highlights that there's no one-size-fits-all solution.
We all have different sleep needs, and a lot of this boils down to genetics rather than behaviour or choice.
That's true when it comes to both the duration and quality of our sleep.
Some people are just naturally inclined to require less sleep.
Interestingly, there is now evidence that some people can function with much less sleep than others, and these individuals have been labeled elite sleepers, with the scientific term being familial, natural short sleepers.
They make up about three percent of the population, and their existence was first identified by researchers at the University of California in 2009.
More recently, it emerged that they possess a gene mutation that leads to their reduced sleep needs and better sleep quality, without any increased risk of conditions like dementia.
Well, it's probably more accurate to say that our sleep needs evolve over time.
There are certainly physiological changes as we age.
For instance, the proportion of deep sleep decreases, while periods of light sleep and nocturnal awakenings increase.
That may result in a reduction in total sleep time.
However, lifestyle factors such as work schedules, health issues and family responsibilities also play a significant role in shaping our sleep patterns as we grow older.
Can we be naturally inclined to be a morning person or a night owl?
Absolutely.
It all comes down to our chronotype.
The chronotype refers to an individual's tendency to be more alert and productive, either in the morning or in the evening.
This is closely linked to our internal clock, which is influenced by genetics.
Simply put, there are three main chronotypes, morning, intermediate and evening.
Someone with a morning chronotype typically finds it easier to wake up early and function well in the morning.
However, it's worth noting that chronotypes can change over time, influenced by various factors such as age and lifestyle.
