Easy English Expression, rehashed!
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English!
Hello, everybody.
EQ number 446.
Easy English expression.
I love today's word.
It's actually very useful.
Just like our community.
Are you in?
School.com slash LME.
Enjoy the podcast.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is a good one.
Listen to this word.
Try and spell it.
A hodgepodge.
A hodgepodge.
Shane's book collection is a hodgepodge.
America is a hodgepodge of cultures and people.
A hodgepodge.
Spelling.
H-O-D-G-E-P-O-D-G-E.
It's one word.
It's a noun.
A hodgepodge.
H-O-D-G-E-P-O-D-G-E.
A hodgepodge simply means a mixture.
But sometimes if we think of a mixture There's some balance.
There's some sense of organization we can kind of see.
But a hodgepodge is a crazy mixture.
There is no balance.
It's very hard to make sense.
It's very hard to see any one particular thing.
Now, if you go to my hometown in Wisconsin, everybody's white.
Everybody's white.
There's no hodgepodge at all.
It's a very white community.
When I was in the army, I lived in a town near Macon, Georgia.
And Macon, Georgia is very black.
There are white people too, but it's very black.
Some parts of town completely black.
Some parts of town completely white.
There was no hodgepodge.
But...
If you go to a city like Minneapolis or Chicago or New York, it's a hodgepodge.
Every culture, every language, every color of person is there.
It's a hodgepodge.
You see a white guy with a black guy, with a brown guy, with a yellow guy, with a green guy, with a blue guy, with an orange guy.
Every color all together.
It's amazing.
It's a hodgepodge.
So the word hodgepodge means a mixture, but it's a disorganized mixture.
In some respects, it looks like a mess, M-E-S-S, kind of a dirty mixture.
So we talk about my books.
If you look at Coach Shane's book collection, it's a hodgepodge.
I've got books on history, books on business, books on art.
I've got mystery books.
I've got factual books, funny books, silly books, stupid books, religious books, non-religious books.
I've got books on chemistry and biology.
I've I've got books on every type of subject you can imagine.
It's pretty crazy.
I've got dictionaries.
I've got English dictionaries, Korean dictionaries, French dictionaries, German dictionaries, British dictionaries, American dictionaries.
I've got Italian dictionaries.
I've got everything under the sun.
Japanese dictionaries.
Yes, I do.
I've got a Chinese dictionary.
It's insane.
I can't even read the Chinese characters.
My collection is a hodgepodge.
A hodgepodge of this and that.
So my books look cool.
I like the look of my books.
And to me, they're organized.
They're not a mess.
But to other people, it might look like a mess.
Let's check out the dialogue and you'll hear another example of a hodgepodge.
Something smells good.
It's just a hodgepodge of leftovers.
Is it ready?
I'm starving.
In about 30 minutes.
I like leftovers.
We studied leftovers.
Leftovers, food from yesterday, food from last night.
Sometimes, if you have lots of leftovers in your refrigerator, You need to cook all of them together and just have a hodgepodge of leftovers for dinner or for lunch.
And those meals, I don't know, to me, are so delicious.
I love a meal of leftovers, especially if it's a hodgepodge of leftovers.
Leftovers from Monday night, from Tuesday night, from Sunday night, from Saturday lunch, four different meals, all those leftovers for lunch today.
Ooh, that sounds good.
Unfortunately, right now in my refrigerator, do I have any leftovers?
I don't think I have any leftovers.
I'm going to have to start cooking.
Yes, indeed.
Yes, indeed.
If I make something delicious, I'll be sure to post a picture on Facebook.
Today's word is a hodgepodge.
It's a great word.
Can you use this word to describe something that you have?
And go online, go to Google and search hodgepodge and see how other people are using this great word.
Let's check out that dialogue two more times.
