It's a word today. Actually, we almost always say it in two words but it is a fantastic expression.

How was your day going?

Today, it's been pretty good for me.

I started my day with some coffee, then I took a little walk, then I made some lunch and whatnot.

And whatnot? That is today's expression.

And whatnot. W -H -A -T -N -O -T It's one word, and whatnot.

Basically, this word means etc. etc. and so on and so on.

This, and that. It's a very useful expression.

Listen to the dialogue and you'll get the idea.

What'd you get at the store?

I got some chips and cheese dip and candy bars and whatnot.

Ooh, can I have a candy bar?

No, they're for the party.

You'll have to wait.

Okay, so the one guy went to the store and what did he buy?

He bought chips. America, when we say chips, we think of potato chips.

And cheese dip, cheese dip.

Now, sometimes when you eat potato chips, there's a sauce, a cheese sauce that you can put the chip into.

that's called a dip.

And this is a cheese dip.

There are many different types of dip.

So, I got some chips and cheese dip and candy bars.

Now, in America, when we say candy bars, we almost always think of chocolate.

Chocolate candy bars like Snickers and Kit Kat.

Mmm, I like it. So, wait a minute.

This by this guy is buying chips cheese dip candy bars Is this healthy food?

Not really, so anyway his sentence was I got some chips and cheese dip and candy bars and whatnot Etc and this and that and some other things.

That's the idea so So, we can assume by listening to what he bought, he's preparing for a party.

So, does this make sense?

I got some chips and cheese dip and candy bars and soda.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Does this make sense?

I got some chips and dip and candy bars and steak.

What? No, steak doesn't follow in that same pattern, so when we say, what not, we have to recognize that ABC, there's a relationship, there's a relationship between them.

Okay, so you can't say something that's totally unrelated, but once again, it's easy when you think of examples.

So my question for you.

What sort of things...

what sort of subjects did you study in school?

If you ask me, I can say, well I studied Asian history, economics, accounting, and what not.

Now, how are those related?

Asian history and accounting.

Those are totally different.

Economics and accounting, those are similar, but all three are subjects.

They're college subjects.

Classes that I took in college.

So there is a relationship.
