Hello everybody welcome back to daily easy English expression the podcast. This podcast is brought to you by GiftBunil.
Thank you very much. From Yutaka thank you so much and again from Denton John.
Denton John, you increased your patron plan.
Thank you so much buddy, that means so much to me.
Seriously, I love that.
Thank you so much. Now, thanks to these three great people and all the other patrons, and of course, you for listening, we have a great expression today, and it is to straighten something or someone out, Out, to straighten it out, to straighten him out.
So, straighten, S -T -R -A -I -G -H -T -E -N, to straighten something out.
Well, yes, it means to make something straight, okay?
But what does this really mean?
So to straighten something out means to fix something.
To resolve a problem.
To solve a problem.
To if there is something that is very disorganized to make it organized.
If something or someone is confused, to clear up their confusion.
Somebody who is— who needs to be straightened out, they need to be yelled at.
They need to be taught how to do something.
So if I said to a young child, I'm going to straighten you out.
That means I'm going to make you into a good man.
I'm going to teach you a lesson.
I'm going to teach you how to behave if I create Computer program, but there are just so many problems for example in America.
Have you heard of Obamacare?
Yeah, it's the United States national health insurance plan so many problems somebody needs to go and straighten it out.
Somebody needs to go and fix that problem.
Do you understand? Now a really simple idea to think of would be your telephone cord at home.
You know, if you have a telephone at home, you hold the thing in your hand and then the wire, it's very curly, it curly, curly, curly, curly, curly to the phone?
And sometimes that wire gets all tied together and it's really terrible.
Well, in that situation, you need to straighten out the telephone cord. straighten out the telephone cord. Sometimes little young boys, you know, they start doing bad things.
They start smoking or maybe drinking.
Their life is getting all twisted and not good, Those young boys and young girls, young girls too.
Those kids need to be straightened out, right?
That's right, damn it.
Okay, let's check out a dialogue.
Professor Dick was so rude to me.
He probably didn't know you were a teacher.
Ugh, I'm really mad.
I'll go talk to him and straighten this out.
Don't worry. I won't be happy unless he apologizes.
Ah, did you understand the situation?
So one guy is angry and he's angry because of a professor.
The professor's name is Professor Dick.
And this professor was, he didn't know that this guy is also a professor.
So do you understand?
So professor dick is probably an old professor and this other guy He's a new professor, but professor dick did not know that he was a new professor so he was probably speaking to him like a student and Professors have lots of pride They do not like they do not like to be talked to as a student he's really angry so the other guy said oh he probably didn't know you're a teacher don't worry I'll go talk to professor dick and straighten this out I will straighten out this misunderstanding I will straighten out this confusion I will clear up the problem I will solve the problem do You understand?
To straighten someone out.
To straighten something out.
To organize something.
To make something better.
To clear up a misunderstanding.
To educate someone, so that they are proper.
That's the idea. It's a very flexible phrasal verb.
Can you give me an example of how you can use, to straighten something out?
I would love to hear from you.
