Hello and welcome to the English like native podcast. My name is Anna and you're listening to week 28, day 1 of your English five a day.
The second season. This is the series that helps you to build that habit of daily dipping into the English language so that over time you can start to feel more like yourself when communicating in English.
So let's begin, as we always do, with a snapshot.
My flatmate is such a clean freak that she scrops the toilet system with bleach every single day.
For her, living in what she considers unsanitary conditions is absolute torture.
I've never met anyone who gets so upset about a few dirty dishes in the sink.
Okay. Let's dive into the vocabulary, starting with the noun, clean freak, a clean freak.
Two words, clean, C -L -E -A -N, freak, F -R -E -A -K, a clean freak is a person who is obsessed with cleaning and keeping everything very tidy.
As a teenager, I lived with a lady who, every morning, would, from very early, leave the vacuum cleaner outside my bedroom door and a cloth and she would knock me up about half an hour before I was due to wake up and tell me that I needed to vacuum my room and wipe all the condensation off the windows.
At the time, I honestly thought she was a clean freak because I didn't see why it was necessary to Hoover everyday, why I had to wipe the condensation off the windows every single day.
I would come home and find her scrubbing the skirting boards she was obsessed with cleaning.
As an adult, I kind of get it.
When you own your own place, so when you have your own home, and you see how bad things can get if you don't maintain a certain level of order and cleanliness, I understand.
I now, am the person who every morning, cleans all the condensation from the windows from every bedroom, or every room where condensation appears.
I'm the one who's constantly vacuuming and putting things away and dusting the sides and complaining about the mess, because I know that if you don't keep on top of things, it can get quite bad, like the window frames could start to rot or mould will begin to grow on the windows if you don't wipe away the condensation.
And so now I'm a bit of a clean freak.
It's quite hard to keep everything perfectly clean when you have little ones and a business to run and so much going on in life.
But I try. Would you consider yourself a clean freak or not?
Do you know a clean freak?
Here's another example.
My sister is a clean freak.
She vacuums the house every day.
Next we have the noun torture torture we spell this T -O -R -T -U -R -E torture torture torture torture torture is great physical or emotional pain so if something is very in a really great way, great meaning, large.
Then that's torture.
For example, if you are in love with somebody, you're at that point where you're deeply in love, you can't think about anything other than the person you are in love with.
But then you are separated for a period of time.
That time can feel like torture when I first became a mother.
Anytime spent away from my baby felt like torture.
When we were going through the pandemic and we were in lockdown forced to stay in our homes, unable to connect physically with other people, unable to go out and live our lives.
That was a form of torture, especially for those who lived alone.
What would you describe as torture?
Here's another example.
Waiting for the exam results was pure torture.
Okay next we have the adjective unsanatory.
unsanitary. We spell this, U -N, S -A -N -I -T -A -R -Y, unsanitary, unsanitary, unsanitary.
If something is described as unsanitary, then it is not clean or healthy.
It's likely to cause for example you might describe a public toilet as unsanitary.
You might describe a failing hospital as unsanitary.
Perhaps a hospital is the source of an outbreak of a nasty disease because they don't follow the correct procedures when it comes to cleaning and maintaining a certain level of hygiene.
and therefore, patients come in and contract additional illnesses and diseases because of how dirty and unsanitary the hospital is.
Have you experienced that?
I know somebody who went into hospital for some routine tests and contracted a nasty disease and ended being hospitalized?
They'd only gone in as a day patient and they ended up having to stay in for a few weeks because they caught a nasty infection, a nasty bug from being in the hospital because the hospital was quite unsanitary.
Here's a final example sentence.
The public toilets were so unsanitary that I didn't use them.
I've certainly experienced that.
you're walking to a public Lou and you go, I don't need it that badly.
I can wait. That toilet is so disgusting.
I cannot, I cannot do my business in there.
I will find somewhere else.
Okay, moving on to the noun, bleach, bleach. We spell this B -L -E -A -C -H, bleach. Bleach is a strong chemical used to clean or to make things white.
So if you have a white shirt and you spill something like wine or tomato sauce or oil on the shirt, disaster it will stain and you might try bleach to get the stain out to make it white again.
you might bleach your hair if you have dark hair and you want to have blonde hair, you'll need to bleach your hair with bleach. So there you go I just gave away.
You can use bleach as a verb and as a noun.
So, I quite like the smell of bleach, some people really don't like it but I do because I'm a bit of a clean freak and I like to think that the area is clean And so for me, the smell of bleach reminds me of cleanliness.
And so I quite enjoy it.
How do you feel about the smell of bleach?
The smell of bleach was strong in the bathroom.
That was the example sentence.
Okay, moving on now to our final item today is another noun and it is system, system - we spell this C -I -S -T -E -R -N, a system - this is the container for storing water usually above a toilet.
So where you press the flush, that's normally very close to the system or within the system, so the system holds the that would allow you to flush the toilet with the system.
Now in the old days, when I was younger, almost every system had a loose lid that you could lift off and we would often put a little product in there, like a big tablet into the system.
And that tablet was full of chemicals that would turn the water blue and clean your loo.
probably contain some form of bleach, and so you would take the lid off the tank, off the system, plop your little tablet into the water within the system, replace the lid, and every time you flushed for the next week or so the water would refresh in a fresh blue chemical water.
These days most systems are built into wall or hidden behind a panel which makes it inaccessible.
So here's the example sentence.
He lifted the lid of the system to check for a leak.
Ok so that's our 5.
Let's do a quick recap.
We started with the noun, clean freak.
A clean freak, a clean freak, is a person who is obsessed with cleaning and keeping everything very tidy, a clean freak.
Then we had the noun torture, which is great physical or emotional pain torture.
We had the adjective unsanitary.
Unsanitary means not clean or healthy and likely to cause disease unsanitary.
we had the noun bleach that chemical that I like the smell of that makes things clean, or makes things white bleach and we had the noun system which is the container for storing water often found above a toilet, a system.
Let's now Do this for pronunciation purposes please repeat after me.
Clainfrik Clainfrika torture torture unsanitary unsanitary bleach bleach system, system, fabulous, okay.
I'm gonna test your memory now.
If something causes greater emotional pain like being separated from a loved one or being made to wait for ages for of something you care about.
What is that? It's torture!
Yes, and if something is very unclean.
It's not very healthy because it's not clean at all.
It's likely to make me sick.
What adjective would I use to describe this place or thing?
Unsanitary. Very good.
If something is unsanitary let's say a bathroom is filthy and likely to make me sick.
What chemical could I use to clean it?
Leech, fantastic. And, in the past I might put a special chemical tablet in the tank of water that feeds the toilet.
What is that tank usually called?
A system, brilliant.
And finally, if I were cleaning the walls and the floors and every item in the house, every single day, you would be justified in calling me a what?
A clean freak! OK, let's now hit our snap -shot once again.
My flatmate is such a clean freak that she scrubbs the toilet system with bleach every single day.
for her living in what she considers unsanitary conditions is absolute torture I've never met anyone who gets so upset about a few dirty dishes in the sink wonderful now I want you to listen out for our target vocabulary once more as we head into storytime I suppose I've always been what people call a clean freak.
It's not something I chose to become.
It just happened, slowly, like watching paint dry or grass grow.
One day I was normal, and the next day I was scrubbing the inside of my kettle with the toothbrush.
My friends think I'm mad.
They roll their eyes when I arrive at their houses with my own cutlery wrapped in a clean tea towel.
They don't understand that eating with their spoons feels like torture to me.
How can they not see the tiny spots of dried food clinging to the metal?
How can they ignore that faint smell of old washing up liquid?
My bathroom is my pride and joy.
I clean it every morning and evening, like a religious ritual.
The toilet system gets special attention.
I lift the lid and clean inside it twice a week with bleach and a special brush I bought online.
Most people don't even know you can clean inside there, but I do.
Water sits in that system for hours, and if it's not properly maintained it becomes unsanitary.
The thought of dirty water touching the bowl makes my skin crawl, ohhh, I realised this behaviour seems extreme to others.
Oh my sister visited last month and watched me clean the light switches with antibacterial wipes.
You've gone too far, she said.
This isn't normal. But what is normal?
Is it normal to live surrounded by germs and dirt?
Is it normal to accept that surfaces haven't been properly cleaned?
The thing is, I know my home is truly clean.
When I sit on my sofa I know it's been vacuumed and wiped down that morning.
When I cooked dinner, I know my kitchen surfaces are spotless.
There's a piece in this knowledge that other people will never understand.
But, sometimes I wonder if I've trapped myself in a prison of my own making.
Last week my neighbour invited me for coffee.
Lookie, I wanted to go.
She seems lovely. But I couldn't stop thinking about her kitchen.
Would her muds be properly clean?
Would there be crumbs on her worktop?
Oh, the anxiety was too much, so I made an excuse about being busy.
I'm beginning to realise that my need for cleanliness might be cleaning away more than just dirt and germs. It might be cleaning friendships, spontaneous moments and simple pleasures, perhaps being a clean freak has made my life too small.
maybe it's time to put down the bleach and pick up the phone.
maybe I should call my neighbor back and accept that coffee invitation.
maybe I can learn to live with a little dirt if it means I can live the little more joy, after all.
Life is messy, and perhaps that's not such terrible thing.
And that brings us to the end of today's episode I do hope you enjoyed it.
If you did then I would be eternally grateful if you take a second to leave a like, of rating or review.
And of course, come back again tomorrow so I can tickle your ear drums and give you some new vocabulary.
Until then, take very good care, and goodbye.
