Headspace studio. Hello, hello, it's Eve here.
Welcome back to Radio Headspace and to Thursday.
We're almost at the end of the week, but you've got this.
That's actually what I want to talk about today.
The idea that no matter what challenges you're facing, you're capable of making change.
Whether it's dealing with a stressful situation at work, navigating bumps in a relationship, pursuing a big life goal, or making healthy changes in your life, you've got this.
I was chatting with a friend recently who'd been recovering from a pretty bad knee injury.
She'd been able to start running again after thinking it would never be possible.
The key thing for her was starting really small.
At first, it was just five minutes a day, then she gradually built it up, and she can now do 5K pretty easily.
Real, meaningful change is possible, but it doesn't happen overnight.
That's the hard bit.
It takes time, patience, and perhaps most importantly, belief in yourself.
In yesterday's episode, I talked about this fixing mode.
This urge to want to fix, give advice, or offer solutions when someone is struggling.
A mental health coach is not there to provide all the answers, and they are certainly not there to offer advice or to fix you.
It's actually about empowering you to take ownership of your journey.
That's where the magic happens, because it's your life, and only you knows what feels right for you.
You are an expert on you.
However, we won't always be ready to jump in and make big changes all at once.
Being ready to make a change plays a really important role.
And there's a model called the stages of change, which describes how we move through different phases when we're trying to change a behavior or start something new.
I remember thinking I would never be able to quit my job in advertising.
It felt too scary to make a big change like that, but I did.
And I know this stages of change sounds quite technical, but I think it's helpful to understand and I'll walk you through them.
So first, there's the pre -contemplation stage, where you might not even be thinking about making a change.
Then you move into what's called contemplation, where you start to consider the possibility of making a change.
After that, there's preparation, where you begin to plan to make a change, which is then followed by taking action, where you actively make the change.
And then finally, there's maintenance, where you work to keep that change going.
I think it's helpful to know where you are in this cycle, because it can help you set realistic expectations for yourself.
If you're in the contemplation stage, you don't have to put pressure on yourself to be taking action just yet.
And starting small is 100 % OK.
In fact, it's encouraged.
Each stage is important and valuable in its own right.
So if you're feeling stuck or unsure, that's OK.
It's all part of the process.
And when you know what truly matters to you, it becomes a lot easier to make decisions and take actions that align with you.
For example, if you really value kindness, then approaching a stressful situation with patience and understanding might feel more natural to you.
Or if you value creativity, finding ways to express that creativity, whether it's through art, writing or problem -solving, will feel really good.
By connecting with your values, meaning and purpose, it reminds you what gives you joy.
And we can so often overlook those things.
And once you've connected with those values, you can start using tools to help build your confidence around making a change.
There's a really great tool that I learned about called the Confidence Ruler.
It's pretty simple but really effective.
So imagine you're trying to make a change in your life.
Let's say you want to start exercising more regularly.
You would rate on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being no -confidence and 10 being full -confidence, where you would say your confidence level is in making that change.
If your answer was, say, a 5, a follow -up or reflective question could be, what would it take to move that number up to a 6 or a 7?
This approach helps you to think practically and specifically about what might increase your confidence, whether it's getting more support, more accountability, or starting with smaller steps, or simply just reminding yourself that you've succeeded before.
It's a great way to break things down into manageable steps, rather than feeling overwhelmed by the big picture.
And finally, I want to talk about the power of mantras.
When we're working towards making a change, whether it's something big or small, it can be really helpful to have a simple mantra that keeps you grounded and focused.
A mantra is just a short phrase or sentence that you can repeat to yourself whenever you need a little boost.
It could be something like, I've got this, or I trust myself.
Whatever resonates with you, it can help you stay connected to your inner strength.
So as we come to the end of today's episode, I encourage you to reflect on where you are in your own journey of change.
What small steps can you take to move forward?
Thank you for listening today.
I hope this episode has given you a little extra confidence.
And I look forward to being back here with you tomorrow.
Take care and remember, you've got this.
How do you feel when you switch to Geico and save on your car insurance?
It's like going to work on one Thursday morning and thinking to yourself, just one more day until Friday.
But then somebody in the elevator says, Happy Friday!
Then you check your phone quickly and discover today is actually Friday.
So yes, Happy Friday, random stranger in the elevator.
Happy Friday indeed.
Yep, switching and saving with Geico feels just like that.
