Hey, everyone. Welcome back to Podcast and Chill.
I'm Leo, your go -to guy for fun and motivation.
And I'm Gwen, ready to bring you some practical tips to kick off your year.
Can you believe it?
The new year is just around the corner.
I know, right? And with the new year coming, we're diving into something a lot of people are thinking about.
Let me guess, how to stick to those new year's resolutions?
Close. We're talking about setting goals for the new year.
Ah, yes. The big question, how do we set goals that actually work?
So whether you're someone who loves planning ahead or someone who's hit reset for the 10th time, this episode is perfect for you.
Let's get into it. Hey, Leo, can you believe it's almost the end of the year already?
Time really flew by, huh?
Yeah, it really did.
I feel like it was just yesterday we were talking about our summer plans.
This year has been crazy.
How about you, Gwen?
How do you feel about the past year?
Honestly, it's been a mix.
There were a lot of good moments, but also some tough ones.
You definitely learned a lot.
Of course. I guess when you look back, you realize how much you've changed.
Did you have any big wins this year?
For sure. I finally finished that online course I was talking about last year.
It wasn't easy, but it felt amazing to finish.
You seem to have such a great year.
But I also had some setbacks.
Like what? Like I was supposed to work out more, but that didn't happen as much as I wanted.
I know what you mean.
I had the same thing with exercise.
What happened? I started off strong, but then life got in the way.
I guess, reflecting on it now, I see where I could have done better.
It's like you don't realize until you stop and think about it.
Exactly. I feel like the end of the year is the perfect time to look back and really think about what worked and what didn't.
True. It helps you figure out what to keep doing and what to change next year.
So, Gwen, after thinking about last year, I'm ready to set some new goals for the year ahead.
What about you? Same here.
I've realized that setting goals is super important.
I know. It gives you something to aim for.
Without goals, it's easy to just drift and not really get anywhere.
Yeah, I totally get that.
It's like trying to drive somewhere without a map.
Moreover, a study from the Dominican University of California found that people who set specific written goals are 42 % more likely to achieve them.
I guess it's because when you set a goal, you know exactly what you're working towards.
Right? Goals help you stay focused, especially when life gets busy.
Without them, you can lose sight of what you really want.
So, Leo, now that we know how important goals are, I think it's time to talk about how to actually set them.
How do you often set your goals?
I set my goals using the SMART method.
Have you ever heard about it?
What is that? It really helps make goals clear and easy to follow.
What does SMART stand for?
SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound.
So it's like a checklist to make sure your goals are on point, right?
Correct. So for example, instead of saying, I wanna get fit, you'd say something like, I wanna exercise three times a week for 30 minutes.
It sounds way more specific.
Plus, it's measurable.
Does it mean to track your progress?
Yes, you need to know for sure how many times you've worked out each week.
Obviously, it's easier to stay motivated when you can see progress.
Right, and it has to be achievable too.
Letter A in SMART, right?
Correct. If you set a goal that's too big, you might get discouraged.
Like, if I said, I'm going to run a marathon next month, I'd probably give up after a week.
That would be a little too much.
I totally agree. That's why it's important to make sure your goal is something you can actually do.
And it should be relevant too.
Your goals should match what you really want.
I couldn't agree more.
And finally, time bound.
Give yourself a deadline.
What kind of deadline?
Like, I wanna read 12 books this year.
Instead of just saying, I wanna read more.
Oh, right. That kind of deadline will keep us on track.
For sure, when you set goals the smart way, it's easier to see where you're going and how to get there.
All right, Gwen. Let's go over some new vocabulary for today.
First, time flies. It means that time seems to pass very quickly.
For example, I can't believe it's already December.
Time flies. Second, start off.
It means to begin something or set the beginning of an action.
For example, let's start off with a short break before we begin the project.
Third, life got in the way.
It means that unexpected personal events or problems stopped you from doing something.
For example, I wanted to go to the gym, but life got in the way with work and family.
Fourth, give up. It means to stop trying or quit because it's too hard.
For example, she didn't give up even though learning the new language was tough.
Finally, keep something someone on track.
It means to make sure something or someone stays focused and follows the plan.
For example, the teacher helped keep the students on track during the project.
Now, let's discuss two questions about our topic.
Sure. Well, the first question is, what is one small habit you could start today to fight laziness?
For me, I would say putting my phone away when I need to focus.
That's a great idea.
What about you, Leo?
I think I'd start by drinking more water regularly.
Nice choice. And the second question is, how can setting small goals help you feel less overwhelmed?
I think it's because small goals are easier to manage and don't feel as stressful.
Exactly. Breaking tasks into smaller steps makes everything seem more achievable.
When it comes to weight loss, no two people are the same.

Recently, I asked Mint Mobile's legal team if big wireless companies are allowed to raise prices due to inflation.
They said yes. And then when I asked if raising prices technically violates those onerous two -year contracts, they said, what the are you talking about, you insane Hollywood ass.
So to recap, we're cutting the price of Mint Unlimited from $30 a month to just $15 a month.

All right, Leo, we've got our smart goals down.
But I think we also need to talk about balancing long -term and short -term goals.
What do you think? Long -term goals are great, but they can feel overwhelming sometimes.
Yeah, that's super important.
It's like planning a big trip.
If you only focus on the final destination, you might forget about all the smaller stops along the way.
Long -term goals give you something to work toward.
Correct. Like, I wanna buy a house in five years.
That feels too far away.
That's why we should set smaller goals to get there.
True. It's easier to stay motivated when you're reaching small goals regularly.
So, if the big goal is to buy a house, a short -term goal could be saving a certain amount of money each month.
I totally agree. And you can adjust your short -term goals if you need to.
Right? Maybe I can't save as much this month, but I can set a new, more realistic target for next month.
Yeah, and that's the key.
You stay flexible, but still move forward.
It's all about finding that balance and keeping your eye on the prize.
You've gotta celebrate those small wins to keep going toward the big one.
Some people might say it's still hard to achieve even small goals.
That's why we should break them down into smaller steps as suggested by the University of London.
How do we do that? Let's stick with the example of buying a house.
All right, tell me.
The short -term goal is saving a certain amount of money each month, right?
Yes. So, what are the smaller steps to make that happen?
Maybe I need to put aside money.
Well, first, you'll need to figure out your monthly budget.
You can't save if you don't know how much money you're working with.
So, I need to track my spending for a couple of weeks to see where my money goes, right?
Once you know your budget, the next step is cutting back on unnecessary expenses.
Cutting expenses? Yep, like do you really need to grab coffee at the cafe every morning?
I think I can make do at home instead.
Right, those little changes add up.
I feel excited already.
Another step might be finding ways to earn extra money.
That sounds hard. Well, you can pick up a side gig or sell stuff you don't use anymore.
And don't forget about tracking your progress.
Absolutely, it feels so good to see those numbers go up.
See? Breaking it into these small steps makes it way less overwhelming and easier to tackle.
One step at a time, right?
Sure, and before you know it, you're holding the keys to your new house.
But sometimes things don't go as planned, right?
What do you do when that happens?
Oh, that's a good point.
Life doesn't always go the way we expect.
Right? What if I get sick and have to spend my savings?
The point is, it's not about being perfect.
It's more about being able to adapt.
It means I have to be flexible, right?
For sure. You must be willing to make changes when needed.
If one goal doesn't work out, you can switch things up.
So, my dear listeners, remember that flexibility keeps you moving forward.
It's all about staying on track.
Goals aren't set in stone.
They can evolve as you do.
So, it's about being consistent and adapting when necessary?
You're right. Do you know what's also super important?
What's that? It's celebrating your progress along the way.
Oh, definitely! In fact, an article from Harvard shows that people who celebrate small wins along the way are more likely to stick to their long -term goals.
Those little steps matter too, right?
Why not? If you're trying to save money and you reach your first savings goal, treat yourself to something small.
It doesn't have to be big, but it feels good to recognize how far you've come.
I love that! It's about acknowledging your hard work.
And it doesn't always have to be a reward.
Right? Sometimes just taking a moment to recognize that you've done something well is enough.
It builds confidence and keeps you moving forward.
Celebrating progress helps you stay positive and excited about your goals.
Totally agree. It's like a little boost of energy that keeps you going.
And the best part? It makes the journey feel just as rewarding as reaching the final goal.
Hey, Gwen. Let's go over some more vocabulary today.
First, set in stone.
It means something that is fixed and cannot be changed.
For example, the schedule isn't set in stone so we can change it if needed.
Second, along the way.
It means during a process or while something is happening.
For example, we learned a lot along the way during the project.
Third, keep one's eye on the prize.
It means to stay focused on your goal and not get distracted.
For example, even when things are tough, keep your eye on the prize.
Fourth, put aside something.
It means to save or keep something for later or to stop focusing on it for a while.
For example, I put aside a little every month for a deposit on a house.
Finally, cut back on something.
It means to reduce the amount of something.
For example, I need to cut back on eating junk food to stay healthy.
Hey, Leo. Can you answer this question?
Of course. What is your question?
Why do you think balancing long -term and short -term goals is so important?
Because it helps you stay motivated with the smaller wins while keeping the bigger goal in sight.
Great point. Do you have any questions for me?
Sure. How do you stay flexible when things don't go as planned?
I adjust my goals, break them down into smaller steps and make sure I keep moving forward no matter what.
Smart move. Well, that's all the time we have for today.
Thanks for tuning in and hanging out with us.
We hope these tips inspire you to set some amazing goals for the new year.
