Headspace studio. Hi there!
Welcome to Radio Headspace and to Tuesday.
It's Dora. So over the Christmas holiday, I had the opportunity to teach at a beautiful wellness resort in Arizona, and after one of my classes, someone had asked me what it meant to allow.
She said she was new to meditation and was always hearing instructors say or mention allowing thoughts or allowing feelings.
From that interaction, it dawned on me that the words we may use in our meditations are familiar to us as teachers, but to the listener, it may just be a word.
So over the next three episodes, I wanted to decode some of the in the jargon you'll often hear meditation teachers use.
Words like allow, resistance, and notice.
Hopefully by breaking down the meaning of these words, you'll be able to understand them when they arise in your meditation practice and also use them in your everyday life.
All right, so what does it mean to allow?
Oftentimes, we're guided to allow the breath to flow naturally, to allow thoughts to arise, to allow an emotion to be present as it is.
In essence, we're being guided to relinquish control.
When we allow, we're creating space for the full faucet of our experience to run freely.
Why do we do this? Because when we don't allow, we're denying ourselves the opportunity to experience the fullness of life.
Allowing life to happen requires vulnerability and courage.
To suspend judgment and surrender to the moment is not a small task, but this is why we practice.
In Dana Fuld's poem, Allow, she writes so beautifully about how our safety lies and letting it all in.
Our weaknesses, our fears, our sadness, and by practicing this we become better able to bear our truth.
Most of the time, the truth or the reality of a situation can be so difficult to bear.
But it's in the turning towards that we can learn how to carry it more skillfully.
I'm sure by now, I'm known as the heartbreak queen on this podcast.
But much of my wisdom has been found in the despair of heartbreak and heartache.
I remember distinctly after my long -term relationship ended, the more I tried to reject or deny the reality of what was happening, the more suffering I experienced.
It wasn't until I allowed Lost to rip the doors off my heart, as Dana Falls writes in her poem, that I was able to let go of my control of the situation and just trust the unfolding of my new life.
So, how can we begin to allow?
Well, it all starts with our awareness.
If we want to practice allowing at any given moment, we can ask ourselves, what are we holding onto, what are we afraid to let go?
And what would happen if we just surrendered?
These may seem like simple questions, but so many of us forget to check in with how we're feeling, and this is where we can start.
So get curious, search the inner depths of your mind to see the different thoughts that you're clinging to.
My friend and colleague, Sam, has a great meditation for you in the app that can support you with this as well.
It's called Accept and Allow.
and Kristin Neff and Chris Germer are two self -compassion teachers and they've also created a beautiful practice called Soften, Soothe, and Allow.
I'll share a link in the show description with some detailed instructions on how to do this practice.
Essentially the invitation in this technique is to work with the emotions that we may be having trouble with allowing.
Oftentimes before we can allow that unfolding of life, we need to create space within our minds and bodies to allow these emotions to move through us.
We can let go of any tension that might make you feel comfortable.
