Why are young people going back to flip phones?
Thanks for asking.
Flip phones, or dumb phones as they're sometimes called, are making a comeback.
But you might be surprised to know that it's Gen Z, in other words, people born between 1997 and 2010, and not your grandparents, who are buying them.
Why do they like them?
Well, unlike smartphones, the dumb phone can only make phone calls or send text messages.
And with only 12 buttons and no predictive text, dumb phone users get straight to the point.
People like them because of their vintage appeal.
But above all, it meets the need to disconnect.
At a time when we're constantly on our smartphones, the return to basic dumb phone functions seems to offer a breath of fresh air and a well-deserved break in our hyper-connected world.
This is the first generation to grow up surrounded by screens and immersed in the internet.
Gen Z are increasingly interested in vintage technology, like retro video games with their pixelated graphics and simple gameplay, while the word flip phone has racked up nearly 715 million views on TikTok.
There are dozens of videos talking about mental health and the beneficial effects of the dumb phone.
So what is the effect of using a dumb phone?
We all know how addictive our phones can be.
Going back to a simpler device is a way of letting go of all that and can result in better quality sleep, less anxious relationships with others and an end to discussions that go round and round on four networks all at once.
Users tend to be less distracted and manage their time better.
They are no longer constantly waiting for a new notification and no longer waste hours swiping at their smartphone.
It's a way of raising awareness of our use of screens and, more generally, our consumption of technology.
Can it compete with smartphones?
Not really, though dumb phone users rarely make a permanent switch.
They use it more as a break from their smartphone.
The advantage of dumb phones is also the price.
They're a far cry from the hundreds of euros we're used to spending on smartphones.
They're repairable and can last for many years, so it's not a big deal to leave it in a drawer and use it from time to time when you need it.
There you have it.
