How are social media and money connected?
Social media plays a significant role in shaping how we feel about money.
It exposes us to constant comparisons, as financial therapist Lindsay Bryan Podvin explained to Very Well Mind in October 2024.
She said, on top of everything, we have more access than ever to how people present financially.
We see the fancy dinners on Instagram, the far -flung vacations on TikTok, and the new family car on Facebook.
This endless stream of curated content often leads to irrational financial decisions.
In fact, nearly 40 % of respondents with financial dysmorphia admitted to overspending just to post about it on social media.
How can we beat financial dysmorphia?
Like other mental health challenges, the first step is recognizing the problem and understanding how your relationship with money might be unhealthy.
Financial educator Joyce Marta recommends working with a therapist, consulting a financial planner and talking openly with trusted friends or family to gain perspective.
