Why does my nose run when I'm sick?
Thanks for asking!
Are you feeling the chills of late with a scratchy throat and non-stop runny nose?
It's well known that winter brings the cold bug everywhere.
In public transport, to work and even at home.
It's coughs and sneezes all around.
Getting a stuffy nose is another annoying symptom that can keep us tossing and turning at night.
But surprisingly it's a crucial mechanism for keeping us healthy.
To combat the situation our body produces mucus.
When you say mucus, Yes, it's actually the same thing.
The slimy substance lines our nose, throat, lungs and even our eyes.
And it actually plays a crucial role by trapping harmful bacteria, viruses and other unwanted particles.
Kristen Ahrens is a pediatric nurse and professor at Purdue University in the United States.
Writing about mucus.
In an article for theconversationcom, she explained When you're sick, your immune system ramps up to produce extra mucus to flush out germs.
While it might seem gross, mucus is also pretty amazing.
Your body creates mucus out of a combination of water, proteins and salts.
Its sticky consistency traps bad microorganisms and other unwanted particles like dust, pet dander and mildew, so they can't get farther into your system.
So mucus is indeed a valuable ally.
Once it captures bacteria, our body ramps up its production to expel them and kick those invaders out.
Here's another interesting thing.
Some components of the gooey liquid stop bacteria from grouping together and becoming more of a threat.
You might have noticed that mucus changes colour as an infection progresses.
That's because white blood cells release chemicals during the fight against infection.
When more cells are needed, mucus turns green and then reverts to its usual transparent colour when the infection subsides.
Honestly, not much as the presence of mucus shows that your body is putting up a good fight against an infection.
Still, there are some good habits you can adopt to lend a hand.
These include drinking at least 15 litres of water per day, getting good sleep, trying steam inhalation, taking paracetamol and cleaning your nasal passages with saline solution.
There you have it.
