Why are there more single people than ever before?
Thanks for asking!
In the 2020s.
We're living in an era where there's never been more different ways of finding a new partner.
For a start, just think of all the dating apps out there of every kind imaginable.
Combined, they're used by over 11 million people in the UK, according to Statista.
Even hobby apps like Strava and Goodreads have become a common way of finding someone to date.
Many sociologists have said that finding one's soulmate online is one of the most significant social shifts of the 21st century.
And yet the number of single people out there is soaring.
Data released by the Office for National Statistics in 2021 showed that the proportion of adults who have never married or been in a civil partnership has increased every decade, from 263 in 1991 to 379 in 2021.
What's more, the trend was seen across all local authorities, religious groups and ethnic groups.
Well, sometimes the more choice we have, the more we feel that the grass might be greener elsewhere.
With a seemingly endless dating pool, people are liable to go from one date to another, hoping to find the perfect match, without ever building a lasting relationship.
These unrealistic expectations can eventually lead to a lot of weariness, also known as dating fatigue.
Some relationship experts have said that the longer you stay on dating apps like Tinder, Bumble or Happn, the more you're actually likely to remain single.
Not entirely.
We're also generally forming couples later in life, which means we get married later or not at all.
Women are particularly affected by the record levels of singleness.
There are more and more highly educated women who, some will say rightly, have very high expectations and uncompromising standards.
That may well intimidate some men too.
While romantic relationships have never been so idealized, personal fulfillment has also never been such a priority.
And the two don't always go hand in hand, unfortunately.
Has the general perception of being single changed over time?
Absolutely.
Cultural changes mean that being single is no longer seen as a waiting room for love, but rather as a legitimate lifestyle choice.
Bella DiPaolo is a social psychologist at Harvard University.
Back in 2017, she gave a TEDx talk called What No One Ever Told You About People Who Are Single, explaining that some people find in solitude a sense of freedom and independence that suits them better than life in a couple.
It's fair to say that as the single lifestyle becomes less stigmatized, the number of people choosing it is naturally increasing.
