Thanks for asking. As much as society might tell us the opposite, sex isn't actually always about pleasure and that's especially true for men affected by the condition we're going to talk about today.
It's known as post -orgasmic illness syndrome or POIS for short and it's considered a rare disease.
According to a review published in Sexual Medicine Review's journal in 2018, there were only 50 recorded diagnoses.
But a more recent article on medpagetoday .com suggests it may actually be more common than we think, and simply underreported.
Let's delve a little deeper.
What kind of symptoms do those men get?
Well, the name goes a long way towards describing associated symptoms. Some guys feel wiped out and down in the dumps after they orgasm like they've been hit by a wave of depression But there can be a whole mix of other physical symptoms too like headaches sneezing or itchy eyes, for example Other cases have seen men report feeling either too hot or too cold and get this it's actually a chronic condition according to research cited on rare diseases journal dot -com One of the criteria for diagnosing POIS is that symptoms occur always or nearly always, i .e. in more than 90 % of ejaculation events.
So it's like a rough ride that follows pretty much every time they get intimate with a partner or indulge in self -pleasure.
Symptoms tend to come on within half an hour of orgasm and can stick around for two to seven days.
That must take a real toll on those guys lives.
Do we know what causes it?
Given how rare the condition is, scientists aren't entirely sure what's behind it.
One theory is that it could be an autoimmune reaction like an allergy to either the semen or cytokines which men release when they orgasm.
Another is that it's due to hormonal imbalance like low testosterone or low cortisol for example or chemical imbalances in the brain.
One thing is for sure though and that is that it does have a real impact on patients lives.
As you can imagine it weighs pretty heavily on them and any relationships they may have. Some choose to simply skip sex altogether.
In October 2022, Business Insider reported on the case of a 27 -year -old man who had quit sex due to the condition, having started experiencing symptoms at the age of 18.
Is there any treatment for it?
Well, experts say that it's been very much hit -and -miss so far when attempting to treat this rare disease.
Sometimes painkillers, anti -inflammatories or mood -altering drugs work, but often only partly and for a short span of time.
At least in the case of the 27 -year -old, doctors eventually managed to help him reduce symptoms by 90 percent by taking an antihistamine called Fexofenadine.
As a result, he was able to have sex again.
but the medical professionals who treated him warned that the drug needs to be studied more for POIS to know its benefits for other people with the condition.
