Why do we get memory lapses?
Thanks for asking. According to research published in the BMJ in 2002, around 40 % of people experience some age -associated memory impairment after reaching 65.
Thankfully, only 1 % of those affected will then go on to have dementia each year.
But still, it's important to be aware of how effective your memory is whatever your age.
Any impairment can be a sign of cognitive decline, which becomes more likely the older we get.
That doesn't mean you need to panic over every single memory slip, though.
It happens to all of us from time to time.
Memory can sometimes play tricks on us, and that's perfectly normal.
Nobody can function at 100 % all of the time.
How does our memory actually work?
Well, to be as accurate as possible, we really need to be talking about the different types of memory.
There are in fact four and they each do quite different things.
The Alzheimer's UK website has a dedicated post about the different types of memory.
They are working memory, also known as short -term memory, semantic and episodic memory, both of which are long -term, and prospective memory, which is used to remember things that are due to happen in the future.
The main thing to understand is that those are different systems that work together.
When our brain creates a memory, it processes information that's received through the five senses and encodes it.
In simple terms, to store this information, our neurons form connections with each other, and every piece of information or experience we have reactivates those connections.
The more we repeat the information, the stronger the neural connections become, forming a kind of memory map so the more you recall or talk about a memory the stronger the network becomes making it easier to remember in most cases occasional memory lapses are simply due to a lack of attention when we're not focused the entire memory making process can be thrown off our memory struggles to encode information properly so it can't be stored correctly as I said earlier there's no need to worry it happens to everyone from time to time you may have noticed that memory lapses happen to you when you're deprived
of sleep stressed or anxious and that's to be expected as those are cited by webmd as possible causes of course addressing your sleep debt or stress will help your memory get back to normal other possible causes behind memory loss include alcohol, tobacco or drug use, nutritional deficiency and certain types of medication which can interfere with memory.
There you have it. Now you know why we get memory lapses.
