Most people don't know why recruiters ask this question and end up completely bombing their answers.
In today's video, we're going to talk about the best answer to the why are you interested in this position?
Interview question.
The most common response to this question is that people start talking about why they love the company.
And another common response is people pretty much say a variation of I need a roof over my head.
But both of these answers could completely ruin your interview.
The reality is that recruiters and hiring managers normally ask this question when you're applying to a job that has different responsibilities than maybe a normal job would.
And this is especially true if you're applying for super general roles like customer success, sales manager or project management.
Cool name.
Superpowers? you need to show them why their specific job stood out to you.
But don't worry, I have a formula you can use to craft the perfect answer to this question that's not overly fabricated or cringy.
First, open it up with one main motivator.
Then, show your research and understanding of the role.
And finally, briefly connect the job with your long-term career goals.
So to give you an example of what this looks and sounds like in real life, let's say that I'm applying for the role that I'm currently in.
I'm a head of marketing.
It's common to ask, why are you interested in this job and my role?
Because the role of marketing manager is extremely general and could mean honestly anything.
For example, I create video content like this video that you're watching right now, but in a lot of other companies they might have a social media manager do that instead.
So my answer to this question would be something along the lines of I love this role because it gives me a chance to play with some new styles of marketing content.
I'm the main video content creator for all of our product-related content in my current team and was the content strategist that led our team to three times our organic traffic the past year.
I'd love to put this knowledge together for the video goals that you have for this role.
Plus with the new Google search updates.
I've made it a personal goal of mine to test out new content strategies, and this position seems to perfectly align with that.
Use this trick in your next interview and you're sure to wow your interviewer.
But before you go, I have some advice on how to answer this question from recruiters, a hiring manager and a career coach.
First up, a green flag for me is when a candidate talks about how they can contribute to our team.
Second, they advise to make sure to list a few relevant skills and even a proud accomplishment, and then describe how you can apply those skills to contribute to the success of the new company.
One says, your answer doesn't have to be glossy or exaggerated.
Keep it simple but honest and you'll do a great job.
And lastly, don't just say, well, I need to live.
That can be a funny opener, but should be followed up by an answer that's personalized to the company and the position.
That was the best way to answer, why are you interested in this position?
