Pa -pa -pam... Why has far -right terrorism increased so much?
Thanks for asking. In early December 2022, German authorities carried out a sting operation on the neo -Nazi Reichsberger group that was plotting to overthrow the country's government through a coup.
It was one of German's biggest ever counter -terror operations, seeing 3000 police officers make 300 raids across 11 regions of the country leading to a total of 25 arrests.
The so -called Citizens of the Reich are just one example of a dangerous threat that is becoming more and more widespread in the West, that of violent far -right terrorism.
2019 saw the Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand, which killed 51 people, and a school shooting targeting the majority Latino community of El Paso, Texas.
The following year, Germany saw the Hanao, Shisha Bar shootings and the murder of migrant -friendly MP Walter antidote.
What are the aims of right -wing extremists?
Their ultimate aim tends to be overthrowing the democracy that exists in their country and establishing a nationalist, white supremacist or religious fundamentalist regime.
Think back to the storming of the US capital by Donald Trump supporters in January 2021.
It represented a clear attack on democracy itself.
At a global level Islamic groups are still responsible for the vast majority of terrorism related deaths.
Most of the times Muslims are also the biggest victims, in countries like Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Somalia, Mali and Niger.
In 2021, just ten countries accounted for 85 % of all deaths by terrorism.
But let's look a little closer at the situation in the western world.
Europol's 2022 Terrorism Situation and Trend Report cited lone actors associated with jihadist and right -wing violent extremism as the biggest terrorist threat within the EU.
Meanwhile the UK's intelligence and security community recently said that security services and counter -terrorism police had foiled eight planned attacks by members of the far -right between 2017 and 2020.
How has right -wing terrorism changed in recent years?
It seems that a lot of the latest generation of far -right terrorists are self -initiated with highly individualistic motivations.
That means they don't belong to any organized group, making it a real challenge for the authorities to identify and monitor them.
Anticipating any potential attack is also difficult.
It tends to be young men, including many in their mid or late teens.
Often they become radicalized online, a trend which was exacerbated during COVID -19 lockdowns.
Some believe in conspiracy theories like replacement, which a number of far -right terrorists have alluded to when justifying their atrocities.
It claims that white populations are being replaced by other ethnicities through mass migration with the help of global elites.
The theory has been widely dismissed as a misunderstanding of demographic statistics and having an unscientific racist worldview.
