Why a driverless car's not yet on the road?
Thanks for asking. The Tesla Wii Robot event in October 2024, saw Elon Musk unveil the company's R .O .B .O.
Taxi, a fully autonomous car which he said passengers would soon be able to fall asleep in and wake up at their destination and offer a price tag of under $30 ,000.
Critics quickly pointed out that Musk has often made ambitious claims about his company's new technology in the past, which didn't quite end up turning out as he promised.
The thing is, we've been hearing about self -driving cars for quite some time now.
So what's different this time?
Well, maybe rapid advances in artificial intelligence mean we're actually getting closer to seeing them driving up and down the road in the next few years.
Does a self -driving car always mean there's no human behind the wheel?
There's actually a framework for how autonomous a vehicle is.
It's called the Levels of Driving Automation and it assigns cars a score from 0 to 5, with a car that has no driving automation getting a 0 and one that is fully autonomous a 5.
These guidelines were first released in 2014 by the SAE, formerly known as the Society of Automobile Engineers and most recently updated in 2021.
We haven't seen any Level 4 or 5 cars on the roads in the UK, but across the pond in the US, Google's Level 4 Waymo car has been offering members of the public rides in self -driving taxis in limited geographic areas for a few years now.
A Forbes article from August 2024 said it was now obviously the leader in self -driving cars.
When we reach level 5, will we no longer need a driver's license then?
Well, it's more complicated than that.
In reality, the automation of our vehicles doesn't only depend on technological advancements.
There are also moral issues to consider, especially when it comes to accidents which are a matter of life or death.
For example, if you have to choose between running over one person or running over five, it's kind of a no -brainer.
But if the choice is between hitting a small child or an elderly person, it's not quite so easy, is it?
After all, at times, self -driving cars may be required to make such decisions on their own.
In the late 2010s, researchers at MIT actually created a moral machine platform, which presented such dilemma scenarios to internet users and asked them what their decision would be.
Most experts agree that if all cars were autonomous, there would be fewer accidents, but that some would still happen, which also raises the question of who would be responsible for those that did occur.
Is it the owner, the manufacturer or the government who decided an autonomous vehicle was roadworthy prior to it being involved in an accident?
There you have it. Now you know why driverless cars are not yet on the road.
