What happens in the body when we sneeze?
A sneeze comes out through the mouth and nose because our nasal cavities aren't wide enough to withstand the pressure of the expelled air.
The trigeminal nerve tells the brain to inhale air and the abdominal and intercostal muscles to contract, expelling dust, pollen or in this case simply air, at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
According to a 2012 American study which was updated in 2015 and published in medical genetics summaries, there can be a hereditary aspect to the photic sneeze reflex.
If one of your parents is affected, there's a 50% chance you will also have it.
To counteract the reflex you can wear sunglasses that helps filter light exposure and reduces its abruptness.
It's best not to because that can weaken the eye globes and deer drums, sometimes even causing headaches or nosebleeds.
In fact preventing a sneeze or pinching the nostrils increases the air pressure within and can cause damage to the inner ear for example.
