Why doesn't exercising necessarily make you lose weight?
Thanks for asking. As summer approaches, a lot of people are hitting the gym with the goal of slimming down.
Maybe you're aiming to shed a few pounds and show off a toned figure at the beach. Naturally, the first reflex is often to hop on a treadmill or lift some weights.
But here's the thing.
While exercising is great for you, it's not always the most effective way to lose weight.
Why is that? To lose fat, you have to burn more calories than you consume.
Simple enough. But in reality, the bulk of your daily calorie burn comes from basic body functions.
Things like breathing, pumping blood, regulating temperature, and even thinking.
This is your basal metabolism.
And according to the Decathlon blog, it accounts for about 60 to 70 % of your daily energy use.
Then there's the energy you use for everyday movements like walking plus digestion, which together make up another 10 to 15%.
So even if you train regularly, deliberate exercise usually only covers about 15 to 30 % of your total daily energy burn.
And a 2023 article in the French newspaper Le Monde points out that a sedentary westerner actually burns about the same number of calories per day as a Hadza hunter -gatherer in Tanzania, whose lifestyle is far more physically active.
So does exercise burn more calories or not?
It does, at least at first. People who are overweight and start exercising often see some initial weight loss.
loss. But according to experts, the body has a way of adjusting.
After exercising it tends to burn fewer calories at rest, which can cancel out the gains.
And if the new activity isn't paired with changes in diet, it's easy to regain any lost weight.
Plus after a workout we're often hungrier and end up eating more.
So is exercise still worth it?
Absolutely. A 2024 report from Inserm emphasises that physical activity is crucial for your health.
Regular exercise boosts heart and lung function, helps prevent chronic diseases and some cancers, protects the brain from neurodegeneration and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.
And when it comes to visceral fat, the kind that wraps around your organs and raises risks for heart disease, sees, endurance sports can make a real difference.
So the bottom line is, exercise to feel better and live longer, not just to lose weight.
And if weight loss is your main goal, a healthy balanced diet will be your best choice.
There you have it. Now you know why exercising doesn't necessarily make you lose weight.
