We've all become a lot more self -conscious about sneezing since Covid -19 came along.
Whether you're out in the street, or worse, in crowded public transport, sneezing gets you more concerned looks than it did before, and people tend to keep their distance.

Indeed, MIT research showed that the mist of mucus and saliva released by a sneeze can reach speeds of 100 mph and be projected over 8m.
Thanks to high -speed cameras, scientists have also noticed that once the sneeze has passed, a cloud containing droplets can remain suspended in the air for several minutes.
How does sneezing work, then?
It's a protective mechanism that allows our body to get rid of unwelcome particles, such as bacteria, viruses, dust or pollen.
Our nostrils are actually lined with cilia and mucus that capture these substances and prevent them from reaching our lungs.
When the nose detects a foreign substance, the nerves in our sinuses send messages to the brain, telling it that the nose needs to clear itself.
In just a few seconds, the sneezing reflex kicks in.
Sneezing involves many muscle groups, like those in the face, throat and chest.
As you know, you always close your eyes when you sneeze, which is another involuntary reflex.
You may have heard that your eyeballs will pop out of your head if you sneeze with your eyes open.
Don't worry, that idea is just an urban myth.
The air released during a sneeze pushes out mucus containing bacteria or irritants.
At the same time, the body also releases endorphins, triggering the brain's pleasure centre.
That explains why you get a brief feel -good moment after sneezing.
Why do some people hold back sneezes?
It's mostly out of good intentions and discretion, as in not wanting to risk infecting other people or draw unwanted attention.
A lot of people keep their mouth closed or hold their nose when sneezing, but it's really not advisable, because doing so increases pressure in the nose, throat, ears and brain.
While side effects are rare, it's not a habit you want to develop really, due to the associated risks.
For example, you could rupture an eardrum by sending pressurised air to your ears, when it should have been released naturally through a sneeze.
Another risk is damaged or burst blood vessels in the eyes, nose or eardrums.
So as much as it might seem polite to hold your sneeze in, you probably want to kick that habit.
