Ghost stories told around a campfire, visiting a haunted house or watching a scary film are all common Halloween activities.
We clearly enjoy scaring each other and feeling scared, even though it seems completely counterintuitive.
Well, there are a number of reasons for this.
How does fear affect us physically?
Fear is an emotional response to danger, both real or perceived.
Our bodies release a mixture of adrenaline and cortisol and trigger our fight, flight or freeze response.
It makes us more alert, speeds up our heart rate and increases our blood pressure.
We breathe faster, delivering more oxygen to the brain, and our glucose levels spike, giving us an energy boost.
So we're ready to act or react.
Why is this pleasurable?
When we're in a situation like watching a scary film, our brains are able to assess what is going on and see that we are not in real danger.
The momentary feeling of fear or panic gives way to relief and our brains are flooded with feel good chemicals like endorphins and dopamine, leaving us feeling safe and happy.
What if the fear is real?
If the threat is considered to be real, it will be remembered so that the next time we find ourselves in the same situation, we'll know how to react.
From an interview in The Guardian newspaper.
The memory of the danger will be transferred and stored in the hippocampus so that we're able to remember and identify the threat at the next encounter.
This is why fear can be used as a teaching tool and perhaps why so many children's stories are full of terrifying creatures and people as a way to alert children to real dangers.
Is feeling relief the only reason we like to feel scared?
No.
A great example of this is that in 2020, at the height of the pandemic downloads of the film Contagion, which is about a deadly pandemic, soared.
According to Meldorf Andersen, an associate professor at Denmark's Aarhus University, it's possible that recreational forms of fear in general can help improve emotional regulation and coping skills.
In other words, we're playing at being scared to better handle or prepare ourselves for a scary real-life situation.
Can you have too much of a good thing?
Yes, you can.
Meldorf Anderson's team studied people in their fear lab and discovered that people don't like to be too scared.
Our results suggest that there might be a sweet spot between fear and enjoyment, where the context is not too terrifying, but not too tame either.
So what's good scary fun for one person is just too terrifying for another.
So be careful and try and scare yourself just enough this Halloween.
There you have it.
