Wider noses and ears grow throughout your life.
Thanks for asking. You may have heard that our ears and noses never stop growing.
You may have even found yourself wondering if your ears are indeed bigger than they use to be.
But there might be an answer.
A study published in the British Medical Journal in 1993 took a very serious look at the question.
The scientists measured the earlobes of 206 volunteers aged between 30 and 93.
The result? The lobes lengthened by an average of 22 millimeters a year, or one centimeter after 50 years.
Do ears continue to grow throughout your life?
No. Ears stop growing when you do, generally at the end of puberty when we reach adulthood.
– but ears tend to relax and spread over time.
When we age, our skin loses elasticity.
This, plus the relaxation of the cartilage within our ears, means that they can widen and lengthen, giving the appearance of being bigger but not actually growing as such. That said, wearing heavy earrings can also stretch out your lobes.
What about your nose?
Well, that is the same story.
The tip of the nose in particular tends to sag under the of years and gravity it too is made up of cartilage and a thin layer of fat and skin.
When does this nose sagging begin?
I'm sorry to say it starts as early as 35 but I can assure you that the changes are minimal and very gradual.
The fat melts away, the cartilage becomes more visible and the ligaments that bind them together stretch. This means that after the age of 50 the tip of your nose drops by about one or two millimetres.
And while that's not much, it can certainly make a difference to how you look or feel, especially as this is not the only change your face is undergoing.
As the face ages, the lips and cheeks lose volume which also gives the impression that the nose is more prominent than before.
In fact the only part that doesn't move is your chin.
What can you do about it?
There is not much to be done, though some people are turning to surgery.
According to the Guardian newspaper, the so -called Lobe Job, is gaining popularity to restore ears to their former glory.
So if your ears hang low, there is at least one solution.
There you have it. Now you know if your nose and ears grow throughout your life.
