Why does the Catholic Church have a moon bishop?
Thanks for asking.
The Diocese of Orlando, the capital city of Florida, covers a large part of the state.
It represents more than 400,000 Catholic residents and, believe it or not, the moon too.
According to the Code of Canon Law drafted in 1917, any newly discovered territory falls under the jurisdiction of the bishop from where the discovery expedition originated.
What's the Code of?
Also known as the Pio Benedictine Code, it was the first official, integrated and systematic codification of all laws, decrees and rules governing the Catholic Church as an institution.
The most recent Code of Canon Law was written by Pope John Paul II and published in 1983.
It currently governs the Latin Church within the Catholic Church.
The Code comprises seven books that dictate policies and act as a sort of constitution outlining the obligations of the faithful to the Church and vice versa.
Who is the first Bishop of the Moon, then?
On July 21st, 1969, Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon.
That's one small step for man, one...
The famous Apollo 11 mission had taken off from the Cape Canaveral base in Florida.
A year earlier, William Donald Borders had been appointed the first bishop of Orlando.
So, according to the 1917 Code of Canon Law I mentioned earlier, he became the first lunar bishop due to the moon being considered a newly discovered territory.
That meant his diocese technically grew in size to become by far the largest in history, covering an area of 146 million square miles, including all of the moon.
And Bishop Borders was mighty proud of his title.
Later, in 1969, he was in the Vatican as part of an ad limina visit required of all diocesan bishops once every five years.
When he met Pope Paul VI, he reportedly couldn't help but exclaim You know, Holy Father, I am the Bishop of the Moon.
He would hold the title until his retirement in 1989 at the age of 75.
Is there currently an active Bishop of the Moon?
These days, the bishop of the Diocese of Orlando is John Gerard Noonan, but he has never publicly commented on the subject.
According to a Crux Now article from 2019, his communications secretary, Jennifer Droh, said that she was sure Bishop Noonan didn't consider himself the Bishop of the Moon.
Droh was quoted as saying, I'm sure he would say God is the Bishop of the Moon.
There you have it.
