Why are some people clumsier than others?
Thanks for asking.
Do you consider yourself a clumsy person?
For some of us, accidents just seem to happen more often than for others, despite our best efforts to be more attentive and focused.
We might drop and smash a glass in the kitchen or bump into things while walking along the street, for example.
And it can really get frustrating when that kind of thing happens over and over.
And in actual fact, it's not just down to bad luck.
There is a reason why some people are more prone to moments of clumsiness than others.
It often is, but it also relates to how we interact with others.
Not everyone feels the same level of sensitivity to being watched, and this shyness or discomfort in public speaking can lead to a sort of disruption in our movements.
That explains why stress or high social expectations can interfere with our ability to respond properly.
In other words, stress makes us lose our composure.
But that's not the only explanation.
Clumsiness is the subject of debate within the scientific community, but researchers at the University of Delaware conducted a dedicated study on it back in 2007, and they concluded that people are actually born clumsy rather than becoming clumsy over time.
The study saw 1500 student athletes from across the United States subjected to cognitive and neurological tests, with researchers then observing their behavior during preseason and focusing on those who sustained non-contact ACL injuries.
They found that those athletes had slower information processing speeds and reaction times, which compromised their coordination abilities and made them more likely to get injured.
The suggestion was that clumsiness is therefore an innate trait.
In general, it's not something to get overly worried about.
After all, we're all human, and mistakes are part of our learning process.
There's no such thing as perfection, and those little mishaps can even make life more interesting, adding a touch of humor and lightheartedness to our days.
But you should be aware that sometimes clumsiness can be a sign of an invisible disability called dyspraxia.
It's a motor coordination disorder which sees people struggle to perform certain gestures and actions.
Dyspraxia affects spatial awareness and movement coordination and can also cause learning difficulties in school.
If you suspect signs of dyspraxia, it's important to consult a healthcare professional who can diagnose you and potentially recommend appropriate follow-up care.
There you have it.
