Which type of wine is best for your health?
Thanks for asking. When it comes to health, many people wonder which type of wine can most easily be enjoyed without needing to worry about negative consequences.
First things first, I hate to be a party pooper, but let's be clear, there's no kind of alcohol that is actually good for your health.
Ok, so red wine does contain some anti -oxidants which have reported health benefits.
But senior dietician and British Heart Foundation spokesperson Victoria Taylor says that while While it is often included in the traditional diet, it isn't an essential part and should be drunk in moderation.
So really the question should be which type of wine is least bad for your health.
Shucks! And there I was thinking I could have a glass or two a day without needing to worry at all.
Trust me, I feel your pain, but even wine needs to be consumed in moderation.
While it does have some benefits, particularly for cardiovascular health, excessive consumption can harm your liver and in severe cases lead to fatty liver disease or cirrhosis.
To protect both your health and waistline it's best to opt for wines that are low in alcohol and sugar.
Decanta .com says that low alcohol wines typically run from six to 11 % ABV, which can be a significant reduction compared to the 12 to 14 % most wines usually have. As a general rule of thumb, red wine tends to have lower sugar than white wine.
While dry wines, whether red or white, have less sugar than sweet wines by definition.
Women's Health Mag says that dry red wines like Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon tend to have under one gram of sugar per five ounce pour.
An average figure which rises slightly to between 1 and 1 .5 grams for dry whites like Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay.
So aren't dry breads the healthiest option then?
Well it's not quite so simple, unfortunately.
USA Today ran a feature on the healthiest wines in 2023.
And they spoke to Debbie Pettit Payne, a registered dietician and spokesperson for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
She actually argued that dry white wines tend to be healthiest. Or any wine grown in cooler climates.
and that's because warmer regions allow for a longer growing season, so the grapes get more ripe before they're picked.
This leads to wines higher in sugar and alcohol.
What about rosé then?
As with other wines, you need to check its alcohol and sugar content, and contrary to what you might think, lighter coloured rosé doesn't necessarily mean it's lower in alcohol.
Light coloured rosés often have relatively high alcohol content of around 14%.
Many experts situate rosé as being healthier than white wine because of its higher antioxidant content but less healthy than red wine.
It's also lower in calories than either red or white, according to LiveStrong .com.
As you can see, it's quite a complex equation.
All things considered, going for an alcohol -free wine is, of course, the safest option.
But if that doesn't float your boat, we feel that a dry red wine will generally be the least bad option In any case, please remember to drink responsibly There you have it Now, you know which type of wine is best for your health.
