You know how ginger and oysters are said to rev up your sex drive?
We've talked about aphrodisiacs in the past on Do You Really Know?
But today we're going to talk about foods and drinks that can do the exact opposite.
They're called anaphrodisiacs and they're known for putting a damper on libido.
Well, topping the list is alcohol.
Despite its reputation as a social lubricant, it's actually the last thing you want for a steamy night.
Now, in both men and women, a drink or two can increase sexual desire and arousal.
But according to Healthline.com, the physiological effects may be negative.
For example, a woman might not get as wet as usual and have a harder time reaching orgasm, while men might experience performance issues like struggling to get hard or to ejaculate.
Healthlinecom also says that in the long term, drinking 15 alcoholic drinks or more per week can lower testosterone levels and impair fertility.
Well, if you're a man who likes eating licorice, beware.
This sweet treat might not actually be so sweet for your sex life because of the glycyrrhizic acid it contains.
In 1999, findings from an Italian study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and they suggested that eating licorice could reduce testosterone levels by up to a third.
The doctors behind the study concluded that licorice might cause men to lose their sex drive.
The good news is that licorice is rarely consumed in large quantities, making the risk of side effects pretty low.
And it's also worth noting that the Italian study was subsequently called into question.
For example, a team of American researchers tried to replicate the experiment two years later, but didn't observe a significant drop in testosterone levels.
Lead researcher, Dr Robert Josephs, is quoted by the New York Times as saying If you are not experiencing sexual problems, eat as much or as little licorice as you want.
So take the original study with a grain of salt and rest assured that eating licorice in moderation is absolutely fine.
Is there anything else we should watch out for?
Well, it's not exactly a food, but sodas aren't doing your sex life any favours either.
Sugary drinks can mess with your metabolism, potentially leading to erectile dysfunction in men, which is known as ED for short.
That's according to a study published in the European Journal of Urology back in 2011.
Its abstract states that high caloric intake, high refined carbohydrates and high fructose corn syrup content and less satiety are main factors responsible for metabolic disorders contributing to ED development.
It goes on to suggest that soft drink consumption could therefore lead to slow and asymptomatic progression of ED, finally resulting in full claimed manifestation of ED.
