T's and C's apply. Which types of alcohol should we avoid mixing?
Thanks for asking. During the extended holiday feasts, it's common to let loose a little, perhaps mixing different kinds of alcohol.
You might start out with a glass of champagne, then move to wine or beer, and end your meal with a digestif.
That's despite the widespread belief that combining alcohol types can worsen the unpleasant aftermath of a hangover and all the symptoms that brings like nausea, headaches, dehydration, vomiting, palpitations and dizziness.
First of all, it's important to note that ethanol, the molecule found in all alcoholic drinks, gets partly expelled through urine, sweat and breath.
The liver also filters a portion.
converting ethanol into acetaldehyde, the culprit behind hangover symptoms. Unfortunately the liver can only handle a limited amount.
So is it really more about how much alcohol you consume then?
Absolutely. The intensity of the hangover correlates with the concentration of alcohol in your blood, which depends on the amount you've ingested.
That holds true regardless of the type of alcohol or mixtures you've had.
It's the blood alcohol level that matters most. So suggesting to avoid mixing alcohol isn't really the most practical advice, Instead it's far more sensible to consume alcohol in moderation.
That's because a hangover is primarily caused by the body's dehydration, resulting from alcohol consumption.
The more you drink, the more dehydrated you become, your stomach also takes a hit, leading to nausea.
Plus the breakdown of alcohol in the body releases additional toxic substances, exacerbating the hangover sensation.
What are these other substances?
Certain drinks like whisky, wine or brandy contain not just ethanol but also byproducts of alcoholic fermentation.
Such as methanol, which can worsen hangover symptoms. You might also have heard that the order in which you consume alcoholic drinks can affect how you feel the next day.
For example, having beer before wine or vice versa.
However, a 2019 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition revealed that the order doesn't really matter, it's just the overall quantity that counts.
The key is to drink slowly, eat while drinking and remember to intersperse with water or non -alcoholic beverages, setting a predefined limit on the number of drinks you're going to have or even abstaining all together as a sensible approach. Lastly consider asking a trustworthy person who's to also keep their alcohol intake as low as yours, creating a mutual support system.
If you need extra motivation, bear in mind that alcohol packs seven calories per gram and that's on top of the sugars present in beverages like beer, fortified wines or pre -mixed drinks.
If you realise you've had a bit too much, remember that only time can help your body fend off the effects of alcohol, with roughly an hour and a half needed to eliminate each drink consumed.
