Hello, it's Eve here.
Welcome to Radio Headspace.
face. The other day I was at the grocery store and as I headed down the aisle with all the sweets and candy and chocolate there was a dad with his young daughter who was having an absolute meltdown and it didn't take long to figure out what was causing this meltdown as I overheard the sobs and the screams. But I really want it.
I really want it. And the dad was clearly trying to comfort her.
But it was evident that he was also trying hard not to just give in.
And it brought back so many memories of me and my twin sister giving my parents a really hard time over things we really wanted.
As we get older, though, we can't really throw temper tantrums about the the things we want in life but don't get, but we can show our frustration or anger through our words and actions, which can be really problematic.
We can even become quite obsessed with getting the things we want in life.
This sense of, I'll do whatever it takes, or if this doesn't happen, I won't be truly happy, can be very prevalent and it can lead to a lot of envy and jealousy, which can become an overlay to our existence.
I remember when I was about 12 years old and my best friend growing up was given a Nintendo game boy.
And oh my goodness, I was so jealous.
I felt that I would only be happy if I got one.
And my twin sister joined in on the campaign to my parents about why we needed one.
Now looking back, I know why they only got us one to share, but at the time I was perhaps not able to see the lessons they were trying to teach. Happiness is not always measured in material goods, and it's a good practice to learn to share and to take in the joy and the happiness of others.
in today's modern world we are fortunate to be able to with a few clicks on a screen order and buy things we quote really want but is it truly serving us where are these wants coming from what is driving us to be attached to particular outcomes i think it's helpful to explore this topic as it's surprising how often it does surface in our lives.
It could be as simple as wanting to buy a certain pair of jeans because they're all the range all the way up to wanting to get a certain job and if we don't we will have somehow failed.
Now this doesn't mean that we shouldn't work really hard for the things we're passionate about but we can do so in a way that feels inclusive of others around us.
We can lean into those qualities of connection, community, of sharing our knowledge, knowing that our well -being and happiness is intrinsically linked and intertwined with the well -being of others.
Being in a wanting mindset also takes us away from our present moment experiences.
We're too busy thinking thinking about all the things we don't have and we can't really see what we do have right in front of us.
This is where mindfulness can help.
We can focus on the present moment and give our minds a break from wanting, focusing instead on what we have now.
We can ask ourselves what do you see, how am I feeling, what can I be grateful for that has nothing to do with what others have?
so the next time you find yourself saying but i really want it i encourage you to consider what is it that you really want is it serving you or is something else driving this feeling and depending on what it is also reflect on who might be able to help you get there versus feeling like you have to do it all on your own and i recently released a meditation in the headspace app called letting Letting go of jealousy, which speaks to some of the themes discussed today.
So do check that out.
That's it for today.
Take care and stay safe.
