What's the right way to burst a pimple?
Thanks for asking. If there are any teenagers out there listening in, the chances are that you've faced an acne breakout at some point in the recent past, or perhaps you're even going through one now.
Rest assured that was the case for many of us adults too when we were your age, and for some people acne continues to be a nuisance into to adulthood.
It's tied to a number of factors including hormonal shifts, genetics, lifestyle, and diet.
Acne blemishes basically result from an excess of sebum.
Regular listeners will remember that sebum contributes to the skin's hydrolipidic film, protecting it from various threats and maintaining hydration.
Sometimes though, this sebum overproduces and ends up clogging our pores.
According to new scientists, it's a food source for a type of bacteria called Cutibacterium acnes, which is abundant in our hair follicles and capable of triggering the immune system.
The resulting skin inflammation is what we call acne.
Is squeezing pimples actually a good idea?
Not really. Whether they're on the face, neck, chest, back, or even the buttocks, popping a pimple can lead to tissue tears, leaving the area susceptible to bacteria and potential infections or scars.
But we do have some expert endorsed tips for how to burst a pimple safely if you really feel the need to do so.
First of all, you should focus solely on open conedones, i .e. whiteheads or blackheads.
Closed conedones like cysts beneath the skin or red inflamed papules are best left alone.
When you want to pop a pimple, do so gently using two disinfectant compresses and don't forget to wash your hands first. Another option is to use a patch to absorb the pimple's content which also has an anti -inflammatory effect.
What should I do once the pimple has been drained?
To prevent bacterial growth, gently disinfect the area with a compress soaked in hydrogen peroxide.
Avoid using alcohol as it's simply too harsh on the skin.
You may want to also apply a healing cream.
Either way, you want to maintain a moist environment, either with cream or pharmacy -bought patches.
That's important to prevent scarring.
Caring for your skin on a daily basis can also reduce the risk of having an acne breakout to start with.
Use a mild facial soap and avoid vigorous scrubbing to preserve the skin's balance and not overly stimulate the sebaceous glands which are responsible for producing sebum.
