What is the romance gap?
Thanks for asking. There's certainly been a lot of progress in breaking down gender roles since the turn of the century, but still traditional expectations persist in the heteronormative dating world.
Ladies, have you wondered how many texts it's acceptable to send a guy in a day, or whether using a heart emoji is too much?
Gentlemen, do you feel pressure to make the first move, asking a girl out and then initiating the first kiss?
If that sounds familiar, then you've experienced what's known as the romance gap.
The what? The term romance gap was coined by dating app Bumble in 2022.
It refers to the gap in expected behaviour of men and women when it comes to dating and heterosexual romantic relationships.
Bumble actually commissioned YouGov to carry out a survey of 7 ,000 adults from across Europe.
They released a campaign video to promote their findings.
If romance is equal, why do I feel feisty when I'm honest, intent when I want commitment, and slutty if I don't?
And it was actually pretty apparent that the romance gap is real.
74 % of respondents recognised the differing gender -based expectations that exist in romantic relationships.
What are some of those behaviours then?
52 % of those surveyed said that men are expected to take the initiative to ask someone out, and also initiate the first kiss.
While only 8 % said they would expect the same from a woman, 45 % felt that men are also expected to propose marriage.
On the other hand, women are not supposed to be too enthusiastic or attached, lest they appear desperate.
And the romance gap manifests itself through a host of other cliches too.
For example, many men are afraid of being judged for a lack of sexual experience, while for women it's quite the opposite.
Having had too many partners is seen as a bad thing.
There's also the idea that women have a shelf life when it comes to dating, an age by which they need to settle down in a relationship, when the same expectations simply aren't held of men.
What are the consequences?
The romance gap can create a lot of pressure and dissatisfaction for both men and women.
For women it can mean that they have to compromise their own desires and preferences to fit into a passive or submissive role.
For men it can mean that they have to take on all the responsibility and risk of initiating a relationship.
They may feel that they have to impress women with their money, status or gifts and conform to a dominant or aggressive role that doesn't truly match their personality or values.
Indeed 52 % of respondents to the Bumble survey stated that the impact of gender -assigned roles causes people to behave in ways that don't align with their personalities and 47 % said that the impact of gender -related roles and behaviours make dating and romantic relationships more stressful and challenging.
According to Bumble Communications Director Lucille McCourt, the only way to close this gap is to make ourselves aware of it, acknowledge it exists and then challenge yourself and each other when you notice that you're slipping into gendered expectations.
