What is stealth wealth?
Thanks for asking.
Stealth wealth, or quiet luxury as it's sometimes known, is the practice of concealing one's wealth or not flaunting one's money or possessions, but rather keeping them private and discreet.
It's the kind of luxury that keeps a low profile and doesn't try to stand out with big logos or loud statement pieces.
But that does not mean people don't know you're wealthy.
At least some people do.
Look at the successful show Succession, where the uber-rich wear logo-free, exquisitely tailored clothes that fool no one as to their price tag.
When you know, you know.
And that's sort of the point, says Robert Burr, a luxury retail consultant.
The people that they care about, the people in their rooms, know exactly what they're wearing, and they're the only ones who matter.
Just like in real life when Gwyneth Paltrow in her recent court trial was seen wearing a discreet but very expensive Prada cashmere jumper.
Why do some people choose to be stealthy?
There are lots of reasons to hide your wealth.
For one, security.
By hiding your wealth, you can avoid attracting unwanted attention from thieves scammers, kidnappers or even the government.
You can also protect your privacy and your personal information from people who might want to spy on you, stalk you or expose you.
But it can also create a feeling of exclusivity.
You can afford it, but only those who are in the know, in your circle, will be able to identify you.
Does stealth wealth mean living below your means?
No, not necessarily.
Though for some people, despite having plenty in the bank, they do choose to live a more simple life, which is a different type of stealth wealth from the stars of succession.
For them it might be, so they could save money for the future or avoid the stress and hassle of maintaining a lavish lifestyle, such as paying high taxes, insurance maintenance or fees.
And, rather than spending their time doing things that only the rich can access, they might choose to focus on the things that matter, like family friends, their health or hobbies.
For others, it's about humility.
By not showing off their wealth, they avoid being seen as arrogant, greedy or superficial and won't make people jealous or resentful for all that they have.
In both cases, it comes down to freedom.
If you hide your wealth, you can have more control over your life and your choices.
You can avoid being pressured or influenced by others' expectations or opinions.
You can pursue your passions and interests without worrying about what others think.
Is stealth wealth or quiet luxury for everyone?
No.
Some people might prefer to enjoy their wealth openly and share it with others.
Some might argue that stealth wealth is dishonest or even hypocritical.
