What is sad nipple syndrome?

The nipples are an erogenous zone for many people.
But as it turns out, having them touched can bring on a very different kind of feeling for others.
The so-called sad nipple syndrome has been discussed more openly on Reddit and TikTok in the last few years, raising awareness.
But it still remains somewhat of a mystery.
It refers to a wave of negative emotions on a person when their nipples are touched or even come into contact with an item of clothing that's too tight.
It seems to be more common in women but there have been cases of men being affected too.
Okay, so what kind of negative emotions are we talking about?
There's a pretty wide range.
It can be deep sadness, jealousy, nostalgia or just irritability for example.
A few media outlets have run reports on the syndrome, like Metro and Refinery29, including first-hand accounts from a number of women.
A 30-year-old woman called Mel told Metro about her immediate feelings of nerves and anxiety whenever her nipples are touched.
And 27-year-old Brianna described it as an emptiness that you can't quite put your finger on.
A post on the womenshealthcom forum from 2007 seems to be one of the first recorded references to such feelings.
User Katie Kins desperately asked other web users for advice in a thread entitled Touching nipples makes me feel depressed.
Even if no one was calling it sad nipple syndrome at that point, it goes to show that it's not a totally new development.
