Thanks for asking. All week long we're looking into 10 new terms and concepts that are certain to be on everyone's lips in 2023.
Covid -19 restrictions changed work practices radically.
A large proportion of the workforce have worked remotely for nearly three years now.
That's the case even in post -pandemic working structures with many sectors favouring a hybrid model rather than a full time return to the office.
It's now not uncommon for workers to have never met their colleagues in person at all.
but still the fear persists among a lot of managers that their teams aren't as productive working from home.
That was made clear by a September 2022 Microsoft survey of over 20 ,000 employees.
It found that 85 % of leaders said the shift to hybrid work had made it more difficult to be sure their workers were being productive.
This phenomenon has been labeled productivity paranoia, which implies that these misgivings are unjustified.
What do employees think?
The results of the Microsoft survey couldn't be clearer.
87 % of those surveyed felt they were at least as efficient, if not more so, when working from home.
Another study from June 2022, this time by Gallop, found that 60 % of US workers wanted a long -time hybrid arrangement.
It seems that workers no longer see flexibility as a perk, but a right, when it comes to their job.
And it makes sense.
After all many knowledge work roles can be carried out effectively from home.
The freedom to decide how, when and where you work may boost performance levels compared to a traditional rigid system.
So what's the problem then?
It seems managers have a hard time working out how long tasks should take when done remotely.
Knowledge work productivity has long been associated with time spent in the office Because it's the simplest metric to measure, whereas evaluating a worker's quality of ideas is way more difficult.
When a manager doesn't see their employee carrying out a task, thinking it should have been done sooner is an easy assumption to make.
The role of a manager is also more relational in itself, which may explain why they tend to favor an in -person environment.
But many employees do deep, focused work, which is more suited to a distraction free remote setting.
What can be done to fix productivity paranoia?
Many experts say that outcome -based management is the way forward. Set workers targets and let them work out the best way of achieving them.
Indeed, productivity paranoia is often partly down to ambiguous expectations, when deliverables and timelines aren't clearly articulated.
Other times it's down to the expectations being unrealistic.
But the struggle for some bosses is letting go of control over how their teams work.
Some are very resistant to that kind of change and allowing a hybrid model has been forced upon them rather than being brought in by choice.
There you have it. Now you know what productivity paranoia is.
