What is premium mediocre?
The illusion of luxury.
Thanks for asking.
You might not be able to afford a Balenciaga coat, a Prada bag or a Chanel suit, but you could probably stretch to a branded baseball cap, pair of socks or some other small accessory.
According to blogger Vankitesh Rao, this is the definition of premium mediocre, a term he came up with to describe the illusion of luxury without the price tag.
From high-end brands who offer mediocre products but with a sheen of something more, to mid-range or even economy brands offering something luxurious.
Premium mediocre, as the name seems to suggest, is not really luxury at all.
This idea, however, is not new.
Mastige, prestige products for the masses, which offers the idea of exclusivity but where no one is excluded, have been around for a while.
Is premium mediocre just for fashion?
No.
Premium mediocre, or premioca as it's often referred to, can be for all sorts of things.
Other examples include food that Instagram's better than it tastes, the best bottle of wine at a cheap restaurant or the economy premium class on a flight.
Starbucks, spiced pumpkin latte with no pumpkin, artisanal pizza and everything branded as signature.
The list goes on and on, as Venkatesh Rao writes.
Mediocre with just an irrelevant touch of premium is not enough to ruin the delicious essential mediocrity.
What is the problem with Premioca?
At its heart.
There seems to be something disingenuous about it, as if we're being fooled by these brands to spend money on something that's just not worth much, as it is mediocre.
But implicitly within the concept, there is a feeling that people who do spend their money on this type of product are themselves foolish for falling for it in the first place, that those people who aspire to high fashion but cannot afford it are themselves mediocre.
As a result, it divides opinion, with some saying premium mediocre, particularly in fashion, is ridiculous, while others sticking up for it.
If all you can afford is a branded cap rather than a full outfit, then why not, if it's what makes you happy.
But there's more to it than just that.
Premium mediocre seems to be everywhere.
Thank you. could buy their branded keyring with just a click of a button.
The question therefore, is not are these mediocre products worth the premium price tag?
But should we really be buying more stuff at all?
